“Behold, the great,

The powerful, the colossal,
Yes, that one-
Oughtn’t you be at her disposal!”

“Supreme, illustrious,
Simply a marvel, I say,
Are you unsure of the person in question?
Ah, this one’ll make you sway!”

Of course, this praise
Was all for me,
The prodigious one,
The one you want to be!

I’m the centre of attention,
The Sun; you’re the asteroids,
What isn’t about me?
The one thing that’s falling into a void.

The environment, it’s
Crippling, blistering, decaying
Altogether; lost in the gloom
Of my wants and raving.

What is the environment?
Everything that isn’t
Me; it labours arduously for us humans
Day and night, like a poor peasant.

It’s all that is not I,
All that I can never be,
Irreplaceable; this planet’s vitality
Underrated by narcissists like me.

We are diverse, she and I,
She is paramount and critical,
But regarded as trivial and inconsequential-
In our society, such is typical!

I, on the other hand am
Not filled with as much grandeur as I imply,
Insignificant beside mother nature,
To become but a fraction of her I can only try.

In this moment of humility, I fall to admission,
Regard with care what I say-
You can consider yourself as wondrous as can be,
But none can keep the natural forces at bay.

Respect is all that it attends to,
A thought given when the time is right,
You cannot accomplish everything on your own,
Alone you cannot take flight.

Reciprocated to you is what you offer,
And soon learned you’ll be:
After all, you aren’t the only one in existence,
The environment is everything that isn’t we.

The author's comments:

Man is at a constant struggle with this planet to overpower and exploit its resources and its riches. For years, the effects of this were dormant, but occasionally - and now as a pattern - the upheaving roar of nature puts man in his place. As Earth Day approaches, this poem puts into perspective our abusive, supposedly controlling behaviour in contrast to the actual power this planet holds.
