Ten Imaginary Still Lifes
After Joe Brainard
Imaginary still life no. 1
I close my eyes. I see nothing. A very very dark abyss.
Imaginary still life no. 2
I close my eyes. I see… nothing. On the left- nothing. On the right- nothing.
Imaginary still life no. 3
I close my eyes. I see different shades of gray. On the right, was a big blob. On the left, was a small blob. It looks likes like a dark gray cloud!
Imaginary still life no. 4
I close my eyes. I see black. Oh no, The blobs of greys were starting to disappear… Why am I not able to see anything…… What’s wrong with me?
Imaginary still life no. 5
I close my eyes. I see… nothing (Again!).
Imaginary still life no. 6
I close my eyes. I see I shut my eyes harder. (If I did that, I thought I was gonna see something.) I sighed. There was absolutely nothing!
Imaginary still life no. 7
I close my eyes. I see that everything is black like I’m falling deep inside a black hole.
Imaginary still life no. 8
I close my eyes. I see the shape of my eyelids, yet it’s still black. It’s so dark….. I try to imagine a beach…. There’s no beach, it’s just darkness.
Imaginary still life no. 9
I close my eyes. I see black circles inside black circles? Uhg, there’s nothing, I try so hard yet I see nothing!
Imaginary still life no. 10
I close my eyes. I see the abyss staring back right at me with a menacing smile; I hate it.

I have a condition called Aphantasia which is not that common. It is the suggested name for a condition where one does not possess a functioning mind's eye and cannot voluntarily visualize imagery. When I was scrolling through youtube I came across a video called "I have APHANTASIA... (and you may too... without realising it!)" by AmyRightNow. It made me realise that I have it and that is how I wrote this poem after Joe Brainard's poem called "Ten Imaginary Still Lifes".
