Going to bed after the storybook was read

Closing the door after a goodnight has been said

Slipping the covers off after hearing a bang

From lower down screams are heard throughout the house like the doorbell was rang

Closing the door behind itself

Sneaking down the stairs as quietly as the elf on the shelf

Things are being thrown, people out of view.

When they come into view they look like monsters that you never knew could be true

When you whine the throwing stops and they look towards you

Your parents have become the monsters you see at night, how could this be true?

Backing up against a dresser,

They come after you quietly without a whisper

Looking down at your own hands,

Not recognizing yourself as you can.

Standing up, looking into the mirror

You see a family portrait of the monsters that were to be feared.
