Lighthouse
Lighthouse
All eyes are on you.
Like a lighthouse in a storm, their eyes are drawn to you.
The heat of their gaze is uncomfortable.
Making your ears and cheeks burn red.
Yet you stand there.
You stand for what you are told to believe.
You hear the snickers, the muttering…
Keep your eyes forward.
Flashbacks return.
Freshman year, gun violence protests.
Peaceful and silence is now screaming and crowded.
Yet you stand there
You stand for what you are told to believe.
They walk past you.
Staring.
Keep your eyes forward.
That first day of school, I stood.
Blazing, adrenaline inducing spotlights on me, daring me to pledge.
I stood for a broken nation.
A rock in a hurricane.
Swearing I’d be true.
I kept my eyes forward.
