The Orchestra
The thunderous sound of the audience clapping
Then the movement begins, the sections overlapping.
The conductor's baton, moving in time
Watched by people live, onstage or online
Everything fades away, except for one violin
The bow sliding across string, till the solo ends.
The other sections join in, viola, bass, and cello
Telling a story that’s both joyful and mellow.
Then all of a sudden, something seems wrong.
Did a section drop out? Something’s marring the song.
Then, complete silence, everything seems muted
Even the babies aren’t crying. Why is there no music?
And then you can almost hear a sigh of relief
As the audience realizes - they’re starting a new piece!
There might’ve been laughter, or at least a few smiles around
But then everyone is silent, listening to the song, astounded.
The audience enveloped in a world of music
Which might make some famous, if they were to choose it.
The last note’s quivering in the air, now the song is done
It seems like the concert was over before it begun.
The auditorium full of clapping, the audience stands
Applauding and hollering, a huge sea of musical fans
They give an ovation to their family and friends
To the perfection that they heard, and their friends they condescend.
