5 Year Old Christmas
My alarm starts to buzz and bother like a flea
wake up and realize what day it's to be
inhaling deeply a smile spreading across my face
The day is finally here again
peering at the window awe of what I see
watching as a snowflake swirl above me
a blanket of white snow covers everything I know
and a sea of glowing light flood my view
I scrambled to my sister's room shaking her wake
and watch as the lights in her eyes wake
the smell of homemade french toast my mom always makes
hand in hand we race down hoping to see
those big colorful boxes under the tree
Oh no! I rush to a stop before I see
what if I'm on the naughty list and there's nothing under the tree
crossing my fingers I start walking wearily
then I see those cookies set out before now crumbs
and a glass full of milk empty
finally I spy the gifts piled under the tree
a grin bigger than Mount Everest on my face
I speed to the towering tree
mom grabs a camera and gives me the nod
start to tear open the presents I stand up awed
together we feast on an enormous breakfast
burst of laughter and squeals of joy filled the air
the day
is finally
here again
