To many people, dying young is a tragedy

Yet, everyday, a part of you dies and pulls you from reality

When the person you love doesn't love you back

When you can't be who you truly are

When all you see in the mirror is what you lack

When they criticize your work so far

When someone you trusted with your secrets begins whispering

When the lights are out and you know you're really alone

When you start a story but stop talking because no one is listening

When you have to lie about who you love to stop those who don't condone

Faced with these challenges everyday

I would take dying young to finally be at bay

The author's comments:

An epitaph is a short poem which can be reflective, melancholy, or even funny. They are usually placed on tombstones to represent the life of the deceased. When asked to write an epitaph for myself in one of my classes this is what I came up with.
