Keeping Quiet

The first time I suppressed my rage,
that moment I went numb,
a part of me broke away as
to my demons, I succumbed.

A lioness, I was meant to be,
This isn't how I was raised-
A lamb, I cannot reconcile the lioness with,
for docility, I never praised.

I learnt to keep mum,
not because I was weak
for if you knew my old self,
you'd never believe me meek.

Once, I fought for justice, stood for peace,
I toiled for truth's revival
desolated, exhausted, now striving to live,
all I fight for is survival.

"mum's the word", they threatened,
my worst nightmare confirmed
all hope within me dashed, when
"mum's the word", I affirmed.

A silent witness to time evolving,
with hate on the rise,
and goodwill dissolving,
to fade into oblivion,
is now my only aim.
Unbelievable- I know, mum,
your girl isn't the same.

I wonder what you'd say, mum
if you knew why I stay mum.

The only reason I stay mum,
is because I want to stay, mum.

This was meant to depict how the circumstances in today's world try to stifle the truth .People who are brave and were always taught to speak up against anything wrong, are compelled to keep quiet, simply because they want to survive. If that doesn't end immediately, they might end up losing their voices.
