"All I have seen teaches me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

I’m so scared.

Terrified.

I don’t know what to do.

How can I move?

Paralyzed.

Yet my fear is nothing new.

I’m so scared.

Lost inside.

I’m looking for my soul.

My heart’s a ghoul.

Made of lies.

And death is all I know.

I’m so scared.

Petrified.

I cannot see your face,

No, not a trace.

Blinded eyes.

All love my tears erase.

I’m so scared.

Tears are dried.

Horror breathes out strife,

No hope in life.

Cannot hide.

My blood’s spilled by the knife.

I’m so scared,

Yet I died.

And there was no release,

No final peace.

So I cried,

But the pain would not cease.

I’m so scared.

Terrified.

I wander alone,

I have no home.

Lost, I cried,

Yet I can’t hide.

My tears won’t dry,

Nothing left me but lies,

Nowhere to hide,

My heart’s a ghoul,

Death is all I know—

Then sirens blared.

I’m so scared.

The author's comments:

Every day we hear about violent attacks. Humans hurting, killing other humans is so unthinkably horrible, terrible. This poem is told from the perspective of a lone survivor of such a murderous event.
