individualism-a rare phenomena

So many people go through this life without forming their own view points. Is it the fate of humanity to simply accept the social rules and societal limits that are imposed on us? Why are people afraid to truly think freely? Often, these are the question that i find myself asking. Perhaps people are afraid of the isolation that comes from branching out, away from the norms.
