Do guns kill people or do people kill people? America needs gun control, but because guns are such a part of this generation and our society, some decisions need to be made. The U.S needs certain rules related to guns and why they should be controlled. Accidents regarding lack of gun safety, owning or carrying a gun, and advances made through gun safety all show that gun control is needed. People kill people, guns are just a way to help them kill faster.
Many Accidents and deaths are the result from lack of gun safety. Using and owning a gun means taking responsibility while handling a weapon, and also when the weapon is not being used. Reasons for having gun control is because of the many shootings, and making sure all gun owners in the U.S safely lock up their weapons. An example from “The Gun Debate” article talks about and elementary school shooting in Connecticut. The article states, “The rifle that Lanza fired belonged to his mother. She was a gun enthusiast who kept a collection of guns in her home. The weapon had been legally purchased and registered in Connecticut.” This shows that having guns, and multiple people in a home requires much safety and responsibility. People may argue, and it is stated in “The Gun Debate” that, “...restricting gun ownership infringes on people’s rights and makes it harder to protect themselves.” Although this is true, you do not always need a gun to protect yourself. America should not just get rid of all guns. We as a country need to control them. Another example is from NBC News written by Tracy Conner, entitled “I’m Sorry”. Tracy Conner wrote about a young family: mother, two sons and grandfather. The eldest son at age five accidentally shot and killed his infant brother, with a licensed gun. The grandfather who had owned guns kept in the house swears he locked his weapons away in a safe. But how then could a five year old child get to them? Why would you keep guns in a household of young children? There may have been a different outcome for that family if gun control was taken more seriously.
Owning and carrying a gun means that at any time you would be willing to pull the trigger. As a person against gun control you might argue that tens of thousands of crimes are prevented because of people owning guns. On the other hand, an article, “10 questions for the Gun Control Debate” shows some deeper facts on the matter. It states, “ But a 2009 University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine study, found that people with guns are 4.5 percent more likely to be shot in an assault, than those who are unarmed.” This means that people owning guns need to be extra careful, and consider whether or not they actually need guns, rather than safety. It could also be seen that owning a gun not only puts yourself in danger, but also the people you are around, and the one you love. Last, is in the article, “Concealed Guns”. The article writes, “Criminals are more likely to carry a gun if they suspect that victims may also be armed.” Reading this makes you think twice about if you do not want gun, because of all the dangers you will most likely encounter.
Gun safety has advanced rapidly throughout the years, but needs to still excel! Many laws regarding gun safety, after a life changing event occurred. “The gun Debate” article says, “ Our nation has often strengthened gun laws following widely publicized shootings… It also barred people convicted of serious crimes and drug possession from owning guns.” Yes, the law has been enforced recently for guns and other weapon control. But it should have started with laws instead of having to act after the crime. Some people may argue that the 2nd Amendment shows that people have the right to bear arms as an American. As long as people who own guns are careful and aware, everyone does have the right to bear arms. Which is exactly why control and safety for weapons is needed.
In conclusion, people do kill people, guns are just used to make the outcome easier. This is a very important discussion because of how involved America is regarding the use of guns. Together working with certain gun control, will make the U.S a more safe country. We need to take a stand, to fight for gun control, and to fight for our future as a nation.
