How Dance Changed My Life
I’ve always struggled to find the sport that I love and want to stick with. I’ve been through basketball, volleyball, soccer, gymnastics, swimming, but this year I found my favorite sport by far is dance. I do lyrical, hip-hop, ballet, jazz, and I have so much fun! Even starting with this and other sports, I’ve usually been the oldest one. It’s embarrassing. I feel too big, and not good enough for my age. But as time went on with dance, I grew a lot in my technique, I’ve loved going to dance, and I’m good at it.
I started less than a year ago, and I get to be on a team at my dance studio. I’ve been working so hard to move up, and I may be able to start pre-comp (pre-competition). I’ve taken a few classes with pre-comp, and they were eye-opening. For me, dance is calming, and a break from all my stress. I get to be myself, even though I don’t have the best self-esteem. Dance has helped with this because I feel stronger, and dance has made me a better person. It’s just so amazing being with other people who love it as much as I do.
I’ve started lyrical, which has a lot of technique and exquisite leaps, including calypsos. If you don’t know, a calypso is a jump where one foot is pointed straight out, and the other is bended back, with your arms in the air, all dramatic. Learning all of this is just an amazing opportunity. Dance has helped me with my self-esteem, feeling stronger, healthy, and beautiful.
Usually with sports, I don’t want to go, and would rather stay home. Sometimes it’s hard getting myself to go, but once I am there, I feel less stressed, and don’t have to worry as much about school. Every coach is so friendly, and I’m really happy when I’m there. I started dance privates, where I learned many dance basics, and then worked my way to team, and I am hoping to move up again soon. My coach said that I would, and it’s a huge honor.
Through dance, I’ve learned how important it is to find something you love, and great friends by your side. I have great friends and met some great people at dance. I hope you all find something you love and stick with it.

Dance has been so amazing in my life, and I wanted to share my story with others, so that they can find something they love, too.
