What Is My Sentence?
Well... it was hard to think of a sentence at first, because it is hard to find one sentence that defines a person's goals, achievements, and ambitions. I believe that a single sentence itself cannot solely represent a whole person. A human is much more sophisticated than you can imagine, stemming from DNA we have the ability to think of astonishing ideas and turn them into a reality. Therefore, defining a person with a sentence is an ideology that is flawed in many ways. Although I believe that a sentence is not an accurate representation of a person, I do think that this sentence represents who I am the most. I think these words hold the essence of who I am as a person and what I value in life: "Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die tomorrow." This is my sentence and I plan to live by it for the rest of my life.
Now you're probably wondering... Who am I, and what are my dreams?
I am a girl who was taught not to hold back in life. To live as if "Nothing is impossible". As clichè as it may sound the statement is entirely literal. I was taught that no matter how big or absurd my dreams may be, the greatest gift of mine was the grit to turn them into reality. I was taught growing up as a Muslim that due to the inevitability of death, living life to the fullest was the priority as a faithful follower of Islam's words. My parents reminded me each day that life is fragile and anything can happen at any moment; I should always be ready to meet with God, and make sure that I have done everything in my power to present myself in the greatest way possible for the final day of judgement.
I have always valued that life is unexpectable and that nothing is ever truly in our hands. Recently my cousin passed away due to cancer which really enforced this value. It never crossed my mind that this tragedy would occur particularly because I had seen her a week before perfectly healthy, however it did. She passed away, and as much as I wish it never happened, it's true. Life took a turn for her and no one was ready. This really made me truly believe that life is precious and fragile and if you do not live it to the best of your ability and strive towards becoming the best version of yourself it will be over before you know it.
Furthermore, I naturally became an optimist due to the lesson that God never puts a person through something that he knows they cannot handle. Through these words I became a positive inquirer, asking deep questions. I am a person who spends her day smiling and laughing and spreading positive energy and that's what keeps me going, I would like to be thought of as the girl who's always happy; always laughing no matter what the situation may be.
“Suffering is a gift. In it is hidden mercy” - Rumi. This underlies the truth of life, that people suffer from the day we are born. But the motif of this quote is a positive advice to enjoy life, because at the end of the tunnel, there is always light.
This motif certainly took me a long time to achieve, I wasn't always the person who would look at the bright side of things until I began to realize whatever I thought was the worst thing that could happen ultimately twisted into something good which benefited me. This is when I truly began to change my lifestyle, I began to always think to myself “Suffering is a gift. In it is hidden mercy.” I believe that this lesson presented itself in my sentence “Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die tomorrow.” very proficiently which is one of the prime reasons why my sentence stuck out to me.
I was also always taught to try my hardest and to never give up; look at the bright side of things rather than the negatives; to be kind to everyone. “Treat people the way you want to be treated.” This was my golden rule for life, it has stuck with me through thick and thin. It is outstanding how one short phrase can be passed around so lightly but present itself so frequently in your life. Throughout the years this always helped me make the most righteous decision, by always making me think and analyze my actions before I present them. I believe that by living by these words I have become the best person I can be and have been shaped me into the person I am now.
"Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die tomorrow"
I believe that this quote symbolizes all these teachings in one sentence, which is why it vividly stuck out to me. I want to be known as the girl who always took each and every opportunity she got, never mistreated anyone, and most importantly; lived life to the best of her ability. This is my sentence, this sentence represents me and what I live and stand for.
What sentence represents you?
