“Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.” a quote said by Helen Keller. This quote inspired me, especially when I think of the time I went to a camp last summer by myself. Now I know that does not sound like a difficult struggle but keep in mind I have bad anxiety. Much like Helen Keller overcame the obstacle of not being able to communicate, I too overcame my obstacle of having social anxiety.
At the age of nineteen months Helen Keller lost her ability to see and hear due to an illness. Since she lost her hearing and seeing at such a young age she did not understand words and their meanings. She didn’t know how to communicate or behave. Anne Sullivan helped Helen through this rough, dark time. She had to have Helen’s trust and soon the rest followed.
My situation was similar to Helen Keller’s, I overcame social anxiety by going to a place i’ve never been with people i’ve never met. What made it worse is I also have heart problems, similar to my dad and my sister, Brianna. My dad’s heart skips a beat and my sister’s heart beats too fast. Mine is like my sisters, it beats too fast. But I was convinced to go to this leadership summer camp by myself. I got through and met wonderful friends in the process.
I believe Helen Keller and my obstacle were very similar. While she was alone with not being able to see or hear, I was alone with my anxiety problems. We both struggled through our situations. Thanks to great friends that guided us we eventually got over our obstacles and differences.
Both Helen and I went through tough hardships, and we both made it through them. Helen’s hardship showed me determination. She never quit even when the going got tough. I learned to not be as nervous and scared to meet new people. Which reminds me of Anne Sullivan’s quote, “We are afraid of ideas, of experimenting, of change. We shrink from thinking a problem through to a logical solution” .
