My Best Football Memory
“AAAAAHHHHHH!” The crowd screams when it happens. When something an offensive and defensive lineman can only dream of, happens to them in game. Something a player loves doing and gets all credit for it.
It was a cold, sunny day. The wind chill was about 45 degrees Fahrenheit. I was changing into my long sleeve, tight, Under Armor shirt. It works well in cold weather, especially for days like these, but this is football weather. I was still half asleep because it was 7 AM. My game was at 10 AM and today's game was special, it was at Eastern Michigan University. By 7:30 AM we left for the game. I fell back asleep in the car watching the houses travel by in the car. "Collin, wake up we're here!" My dad said happily. He was excited to see me play at a College football field. I looked at the clock, it was 8:30. I had to be on the field ready for pre-game warm ups at 9:00. I grabbed my shoulder pads and helmet and headed for the field. The entrance way to the field was beautiful. Dark green surrounded the field, and in the middle was a big giant "E" also dark green. I saw my team on the bleachers sitting around talking waiting until 9. I joined them. As soon as it was 9 my coach told us to get onto the field. Our opponent, Birmingham Patriots, was also just getting there. Within 5 minutes the field flooded with coaches and players. We go through our pre-game warm ups and before we know it, it's 5 minutes until game time. We all huddle together and coach leads us in a prayer, we all echo him. "Lord let us be humble and close as a team as we huddle together today. We ask that you, in your guiding power give us the strength to withstand injury, and when the game is over and we met the test lord let us know we did our best!"
"YEAAAAA" we all scream after the prayer. We are returning the ball first so kick return went onto the field.
"Offense be ready!" my coach said. We returned the ball and got to the 30-yard line. I went to play my usual position on offense, right tackle. Nothing special really happened but all I know is that we failed to get a first down. In order to get a first down you have to go 10 yards. We punt the ball on 4th down and no good return happened. I get on the field for my defensive position, defensive tackle. On first down they run up the middle of the line and get no gain. 2nd down they try to pass but incomplete. 3rd down the ball is snapped and the quarterback hands the ball off, but it failed and the ball is fumbled. The ball is just a few yards in front of me. I throw the offensive lineman off of me and I run for the ball. I pick it up and notice that the touchdown is only 20 yards away from me. I sprint for the end zone, I have never had a touchdown so this was huge for me as long as I didn't get tackled. I reached the 10- yard line and noticed that someone was right behind me running to tackle me. I was already sprinting as fast as I could. Around the 5 yard line I jumped for the touchdown because I knew I would get tackled if I didn't jump. While in mid air the player hit me and it gave me a bit of a boost. I hit the ground hard and I look around, I appeared to just reach the end zone but I looked at the referee just for confirmation. He held his hands up and confirmed it, touchdown. The crowd roared and erupted in cheers. I get up and I'm swarmed by my whole team like a nest of bees on honey. "Scoop and score!!!" My teammates cheered. I got over to the sideline to have my coach hug me. He looked at me and said,
"That's what I like to see!" I sat on the bench and got a drink of water. I looked over at the bleachers to see my parents smiling giving me the thumbs up. I smile and turn around to watch the game. I sat out the defensive series and I came back out on offense. Next thing I knew it was halftime, score was 7-0 and I was the only one who scored so far.
Not many lineman can say they scored but after that day I am able to say I have. I have achieved a personal goal mostly but it was a goal for a lot of people that play the lineman position.
