My Experience on the Big Dipper
Every year in advisory, we go on a field trip to wherever we wanna go. Not just my advisory, the rest of the school does it too. We always go to Belmont Park.., and this year (2013) we've decided to go. Belmont park is a place where there are rides and there is a lot of fast food restaurants. And the great thing about it is that it is right next to the beach. It's called Mission beach. I love it because it has nice waves and because it has tons of people. Which obviously means that the beach is very popular. We went on a school bus and we got there around 1:30pm. We had all gotten off, everyone was so excited. Although, we weren't the only ones there. There was another class that had came along with us. There were lots of children running around. But there were mostly teenager and adults. It was such a nice day, I could feel the wind running right at my face. And the smell of the air was of the ocean. I looked to my left and there was the beach. With the large waves, and the children there, waiting for the waves to come at them. And more children on the sand trying to make the best sand castles that they can make. Then the 3 teachers that were there with us came around to everyone of us to give us our tickets for the rides. After that they started to explain the rules to us and had said to us that we had 2-3 hours to have fun. Most of us all ran towards the rides. Then, one of my friends had asked me,
“Hey which ride are you going on first?”
I responded, “IDK yet. Which one are going on? I wanna go on the Tilt a Whirl.”
Then she said, “No that’s boring, let’s go on the Big Dipper then we can go on the Tilt a Whirl.”
I wasn’t really happy with the idea, because never in my life had I gone on a roller coaster. I didn’t want anyone to know but I had to tell her.
“Why don’t you go with someone else that want’s to go on it because I don’t like roller coasters. I’m scared!!! “
And that was when all the comments were starting.
“OMG! You are such a scary cat.“
“Common you are so lying, “
She kept asking me and asking me about my fear but I never really listened to her.
“No leave me alone. You’re a bully!!!, “
I shouted at her. But yet, she kept annoying me. The one thing that I had not expected from her was that she would go around telling everyone that I was scared of roller coasters. Then I had more people laugh at me and tell me things. But oh well, I guess there will always be people that tell people things that other people tell them. To end it I went around asking others if they wanted to go on the Tilt a Whirl ride with me, and luckily there was. My friend Makayla didn’t know what ride to go first so she wanted to come with me. It was really fun because the ride wasn’t really going fast but yet she kept on screaming. And the other kids around us were just staring at the both of us. The sad thing about it was that on the on the first time, Makayla and I were the only ones that were on the ride. The rest of the seats were all empty. And while spinning, we kept screaming out loud,
“YEAH!!!! Loners for life.”
When we were all done, we went with some other of our friends and together we went to go ride some other rides, such as the bumper cars, the Pacific Spin, the submarine, etc. The only ride that I did not go on was the Big Dipper. We did however walk by it and we saw that there was a long line. We were then standing there because Makayla and I were talking to one of our friends that were waiting to go on the roller coaster. As the time past, the line got shorter and shorter. And my friend Jackson was almost to the front of the line of the roller coaster, he wanted to go on with Makayla but she didn’t want to. So then he asked me,
“Hey can you go on with me?,”
I really wished he hadn’t asked me that. But I responded,
“No it’s just that I have this thing with roller coasters and I just can’t.”
He didn’t tease me like the rest of the other people. He was the only person that had understood my “issue” and did not make fun of me.
“Common it’s not even scary. I swear. Come with me and you won’t feel scared anymore, “ he pleaded me.
Since he was one of my good friends, I took his word. And that was when I was very positive on going on a rollercoaster. And I standed there in line with him and I waited and waited, the whole entire time I was feeling nervous and excited. When we were finally at the front of the line and we were about to go on, the lady that was collecting the tickets asked for mine. I showed her my ticket. She let Jackson and I pass and we both sat together like we had planned to. and we sat in the middle of the ride. That was because Jackson had said that it was the less scary part. The first thing that we both did was pull the handle that would tighten our legs down so we wouldn’t fly off of the ride. But for the law of every amusement park, a worker has to come by and check if it is tight enough. If it is, then the ride can begin. So that was what the worker did, and after he was all done he went back to the machine where it controls the ride and he pressed that one special button to start the ride.
“OMG!!, “ I yelled kinda loudly.
I had a billion, gazillion, infinity butterflies in my stomach. And my heart beat was going super fast. I was that nervous and scared that I was about to tell the man to let me out of the seat. But it was already late. I was also going to tell Jackson that I hated him for getting me in here, but ride was already moving and I froze and didn’t know how to panic. My heart was beating faster and faster. I closed my eyes and the next thing I know was that we were going so fast and we were in a pitch black tunnel. It was so dark that I couldn’t even see anything. I didn’t even know if Jackson was next to me or not. For a second I thought that he had flew off the ride. But no, he was still there. When we had passed the tunnel, we went through this curve and after that we were going to go on a steep hill. Which for me was the worst thing ever. We were going very slowly to get to the top. I guess it was so that the passengers can see everything around us. All of a sudden I heard some weird noises. For a second I thought that we were all going to die. But no, it turned out that it was just the machine. Afterwards, we had made it to the top and I was able yto see everything around me. I looked to my right, and I was able to the entire ocean. It was like looking at those beautiful pictures on the postcards. With the blue, sparkly water. Then I looked to my left and I was able to see the traffic from all those noisy cars. And the amount of people that were crossing the street. Since the roller coaster was so high up, the people walking looked like little ants. For a moment, the trained had stopped at the tip. But then, it was time and everyone screamed at the top of their lungs, including me.
“OMG!!! JACKSON WE’RE GOING TO DIE!!!, “ I shouted.
It was an amazing and frightening feeling that I felt. While the people in the front and back screamed, I could feel the wind’s breeze that went on my face. My imagination was that I was flying up in the air. I had my eyes closed during the entire ride, I didn’t really want to see those awful curves that we were going through and those small deep hill’s that we kept going on. I later then felt like were slowing down so I opened my eyes and it turned out that the ride was over. We both put the thing that was holding our legs and got out from the seat. As we were getting off there was a man that was pointing the exit. Makayla was waiting for the both of us so we walked towards her and she asked me,
“So was it scary? Did you like it? Are you gonna go on it again?,”
She was asking me so many questions that I didn’t even get the chance to respond to all of her questions so all I had said was,
“It was alright.“
We then walked to another direction and I looked back to see if Makayla was walking along with us, but she wasn’t there anymore.
“Jackson do you know where she is?, “ I asked him while holding his shoulder.
“Who?, “ he responded.
“Makayla I thought she was coming with us, “ I responded.
“Oh I don’t know. Wait there she is, “ he said, while pointing at the direction where he had seen Makayla.
So we went back to where she was. She was standing in the line from the Big Dipper. I asked her,
“Are you going to go on? “
Then she responded, “Yes it looks like fun but I need you to come with me. Please, I won’t ask for anything more. I promise, “
I thought about the whole thing and I was willing to go on with her.
So then I said, “Sure but let’s sit in the middle.“
She had agreed with the idea. And so then we waited in line to get on. About 8 min. later we were already in the front of the line and they let us pass so we ran as fast as we could so that nobody else could get our spot. And luckily we had, so we sa down and we pulled the heavy thing down and the same person came by to check if it was tight enough. ANd then... The ride began and from there on I think that you should know what happened. I had the same experience. Although, it was better because I had already faced my fears and I was no longer that scared like I was in the beginning. This time I had felt more confident than I was before. That day I had learned something new, I learned to not be a wimp and to learn how to face my fears.
