I have been attending public school for the past 13 years. When I was younger, my favorite subject (everybody’s favorite subject) was lunch. I remember begging my mother to let me buy my lunch at school. My favorite meals were always the Triple Stacked PB&J sandwich or the school square pizza. However, the food was not the only reason I enjoyed lunch.

Sadly, it wasn’t until fifth grade that I learned to tie my shoes. I looked forward to the days I bought lunch because the sweet old lady at the cash register would tie my shoes when they were untied. She was hands down the best shoe tier. Sometimes right before lunch I would untie my shoes just so that I could have them tied nice and tight. Aside from the cashier, the custodian Bobby who collected the trash after lunch was probably the coolest guy in the cafeteria. I have memories of Bobby pretending that the milk cartons were basketballs and using the trash can as a basketball goal. He was always allowing those with empty milk cartons a turn to shoot a basket. Lunch was always the best part of the day, it got even better in middle school.

Middle school is is where I saw the cashier Mrs. Phyllis in the cafeteria everyday while eating my favorite food…. Cheese boat! Cheese boat was probably the best thing I had ever eaten out of a school cafeteria since the signature triple stacked PB&J sandwiches. The day the cafeteria had cheese boat was always my favorite day of the week. I always looked forward to the crispy bread and succulent assortment of mozzarella, parmesan, and sharp cheese on top. Now I am currently wishing I had some delicious, appetizing, immaculate cheese boat. I sit here and think that I would not have had the opportunity to have these wonderful creations that were prepared by the sweet cafeteria staff at my schools. After my experience in the cafeteria, I’m convinced that the beloved lunch ladies have super powers.
