The Storm
Last week, I was at football practice watching film when I looked out the window and noticed just how dark it was to the west. The wind started to pick up and, POP! We lost power, but then a few seconds later, the school’s generator kicked in turning every other light on. It started to rain, but not normal rain - intense pounding sheets of rain. I stopped and thought, “It’s raining sideways!!” It started to hail, and the teachers moved us all into the hallways.
As the rain got worse, some kids started to panic, while others called their parents asking for an earlier pick up. Many parents replied telling them how bad the damage was, and that it might take a while to get there. Then came the news that part of South Prairie’s roof flew off and caved in due to the extreme winds the storm had created as it passed over Grimes.
When I got home, I had no power, so I just sat around until I realized I had the whole first season of The Walking Dead on my mom’s iPad. I then used my laptop to charge my moms iPad as I watched The Walking Dead. I fell asleep at around midnight thinking there was no way we would have school tomorrow, so I woke up still without power, and my dad told me we still had school.
At first, I didn’t know what to think because I had no hot water to take a shower and no power to cook breakfast. My laptop was dead along with my phone and my parents both took the day off work thinking me and my sister wouldn’t have school, but they were wrong. My sister and I both had to go to school.
As soon as I got to school, I noticed everybody was tired either because they stayed up because they thought there would be no school, or because they woke up in the night from their power coming back on. Many complained that we shouldn’t of had school because many STILL didn’t have power in their homes to do things like charge their laptops do online homework. But for some reason we still had school the next day.
