How can we prevent oil spills from happening in the world? Oil spills can ruin a lot of things, from the marine life to the environment. Oil spills can ruin and kill the sea animals because all the oil can get on their skin and fur, which makes them unable to survive. Also, if an animal breathes in the water, it can get into their lungs and kill them. Oil is NOT good for them to breathe in. And when the animals swim through the water, the oil could get onto the animals and make them unable to move, and can cause death to the creature. There should be larger fines for oil spills.

Oil spills hurt and kill marine animals. Whales in Prince William Sound, Alaska, are suffering through oil spills. The number of killer whales are decreasing in Alaska because of all the vicious oil spills. Usually the population of these creatures are just fine but now, because of all these tragedies with oil spills, their population is slowly decreasing, but oil spills don’t just affect whales, they affect the whole ocean, like other marine life too, such as dolphins, fish, seals, stingrays, sea otters, and all the above. They are very harmful to the ocean. Animals try to clean themselves too, and the oil can poison them, and cause death. The oil can get on birds’ feathers and make them unable to fly.

Oil spills can also ruin the environment, not just animals. Oil spills ruin the environment by getting caught on sea rocks and staying there for decades. Small animals, such as snails and clams, are affected most by it. If the oil washes up on a beach for a long time, it can destroy that beach and it will be out of use until the oil is gone. Also, as the oil gathers up on shore, plants gather it up, and causes them to die. The oil can also poison the animals. In 2011, a group of scientists did physicals on dolphins in Barataria Bay. Almost all of the dolphins were extremely ill. The scientists did not expect 17% of the dolphins to survive.

Also, water pollution is a huge deal with oil spills. Water pollution damages the water just about permanently. This is a big deal because we use water a lot, and when it’s all covered in oil, we cannot use it anymore, so we get less and less water as this happens. Dirty water is a huge issue during this time. The water becomes toxic and is unable to use. Everyone and everything needs water to survive and with all the oil in it, it’s no use. Animals depend on the clean water to live. The water can not dissolve in the water but as it tries, it forms a big oil clump and it stays there forever.

Some people might say that oil spills don’t affect anything, so there should be no laws against it, but they are wrong. There should be laws against it because it damages the earth. Oil spills are a serious thing. It can cause personal and economic injuries to people and businesses. “Recently the Deepwater Horizon oil rig contracted to British Petroleum exploded off the coast of Louisiana and then sank releasing millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf Coast.” (injury.findlaw.com). This proves that there should be laws for oil spills because it’s causing injuries to the ocean, people, and businesses.

Having stricter and larger fines can make a huge change in the world. It will possibly make people stop what they are doing to the world. They have no idea what they are doing to the world. It’s devastating. People should just stop what they are doing. Its not good for the animals and the ocean and the environment. People need to tell other people, like the Senate, that people should stop, like writing a letter to the Government about it. If they do not want to talk to them face to face, then you can just write to them saying what people are doing is wrong. If we all come together, we can make a change in this world.
