Hurricane Sandy
One hundred forty-nine lives lost, billions of dollars worth of damage, and an immense amount of people left on the streets. This, was Hurricane Sandy. We had little time to prepare causing us to have our homes, buildings, and subways destroyed by the demonic Superstorm also know as Frankenstorm, Hurricane Sandy, and many other names. All we can do now is fix the problems and damage and prepare better for the next disaster.
When the ocean waters hit land, many homes and businesses were destroyed. “ The ocean is in the road, there are trees down everywhere-i’ve never seen it so bad.” Said long branch, New Jersey resident David Arnold. Many politicians and bankers are fighting against rebuilding homes on the coastline due to the fact that this disaster might happen again. Many people believe we should not rebuild near the coast; I agree as well.
Government officials need to advise state residents promptly with regards to incoming dangerous storms. They need to utilize electronics such as t.v., internet, cell phones, etc. Eight million people lost electricity, four million people were unable to use transportation all due to lack of preparation. We should prepare for the worst by buying useful things such as food, water, blankets, flashlights, etc. John Miksad , senior vice president of electric operations at CON edison stated “ This is one for the record books.”This statement supports the fact that communication needs to improve for future disasters that will affect people and property.”
It is critical that government agencies provide appropriate shelter, food, and water to whom have lost their homes during disasters like Hurricane Sandy . Angela Valento, mother of nine year old Angelo Valento, kept hearing her son questioning “ Am i going to die?” Valento told the New Jersey newspaper that one thousand people were left on the streets because they had to leave their homes. We as a country learned to be more prepared and make sure we have the appropriate shelter for people who have been suffering. President Obama said “ The most important message i have for them is that America is with you. We are going to do everything we can to help you get back on your feet.”
Hurricane Sandy caused many devastating deaths, along with destroyed homes and buildings. We as a nation need to prepare better for the future storms to come.
