The Chef
There once lived a man named Alfred. Alfred was an average person. He did
average things, went average places, and had average friends. The only thing
that wasn't average about Alfred was his job. He was the owner of 5 star
restaurant of which he was head chef at.  There was always something happening
at Alfred's restaurant. Something crazy and unexpected happens there every day.
Why just the other day Alfred was sitting in a chair at his desk when a baby
bunny walked right in to the room. It walked to the other end of the office and
pushed it's self into a mouse hole. This didn't surprise Alfred at all. He was
used to it by now. He knew it was the magic of the building and that was why he
had chosen to build his restaurant there. This day though was even more peculiar
than the rest. It had started off average. Alfred woke up, washed his face, put
on clothes, ate breakfast, and headed to work. On the way there he stopped to
buy a newspaper at the market. There was where he saw his very old friend of
which he hadn't seen in quite a long time. They chatted for a few minutes
talking about how long it had been since they had seen each other and how glad
they were that they were seeing each other then. The man, being the short and
happy man that he is, decided to ask Alfred to join him for tea that afternoon.
Alfred, being the tall and humble man that he is, returned the offer with a yes.
Then they headed off in different directions. As they parted the old friend
turned to Alfred and said "you never can tell what will happen next can you
Alfred?" and then left. Alfred continued to walk to work.  He thought about what
the man said. "I guess you never can" Alfred said aloud as he chuckled to
himself. Alfred got to the restaurant at his usual time of 8:00. The restaurant
opened at 10:00am, closed at 11:00pm, and Alfred always left at 11:30pm. The
employees always show up at 8:30 and leave just after 11:00. So usually the
restaurant is quiet and empty when Alfred arrives. Not today. As Alfred entered
through the back door of the restaurant that leads to the kitchen he noticed a
young boy sitting on a bucket in the corner of the room. He looked abut 18. He
was skinny and pale. Not in great shape. Alfred moved towards the boy slowly.
The boy's head was bent towards the ground as he looked at the floor. Alfred was
about two feet from the boy when he said "Well, hello there." The boy
immediately looked up at Alfred as if he was just now noticing his presence. "Oh
dear! Oh dear! Oh dear!" cried the boy. "I am very truly sorry sir. I was just
leaving and I just lost track of time. Please excuse me. I will leave right
now." The boy grabbed his coat and rushed towards the door. Right as he was
about to leave Alfred stopped him. "Wait just a minute there lad." The boy spun
around and looked at Alfred with the most astonished look. "Yes sir?" he said as
he swallowed his throat. "What's your name?" Alfred asked. "It"s Bary sir." the
boy responded. "Berry as in the fruit?" asked Alfred. "No sir. Bary. As in
B-A-R-Y sir." Alfred looked at the boy. "Huh. Well then Bary, what were you
doing in my kitchen at 8:00 in the morning on a Monday?" Bary looked down at his
feet as he considered how to answer Alfred's question. "Well sir..." his voice
was hesitant. " I was thinking." He looked up at Alfred with a hopeful look. "
Thinking? Your always thinking. Every second of the day you are thinking. The
real question is what about." Alfred got a crazy look in his eye as he stared at
Bary. Bary looked back down at his feet even more nervous than last time. " Well
sir... Jobs." Bary finally said. "Jobs?" Alfred said loudly. " Why are you
worrying about those? You can't worry about jobs until you worry about passion."
The boy looked up again. "Passion?" Alfred looked back. "Yes! Passion! Do you
have any?" Bary looked puzzled now. "What do you mean? Like hobbies?" Alfred
responded kindly " Sure! Hobbies, activities. Anything that makes you happy!"
Bary looked at Alfred once again puzzled. "Well I'm not sure. There are plenty
of things that I like to do but none of them are something I could do for a
living." Alfred smiled. "Do you like food?" Alfred asked. "Why yes! I love
food!" Bary responded. "Do you like cooking it?" Alfred asked. "Well I'm not
great at it but I enjoy making it." Bary said. It was Alfred's turn to look at
the ground and consider. "Well then. I think I have a job for you Bary!" Bary's
eyes got wide. "Really? A job. Doing what?" Alfred started stroking his beard. "
Well here! You would start out just as the garbage boy but you would watch over
the other cooks and learn from them. I would meet you here every morning at 7:30
and teach you how to cook. Then when you are ready you will become a cook in my
kitchen." Bary stared at Alfred in awe. "Are you serious! That would be amazing
sir. Thank you so much! I can't believe this. When do I start?" Alfred patted
Bary on his shoulder. " Tomorrow. 7:30. Don't be late." Bary literally started
jumping up and down with excitement. "Thank you so much sir. I will not let you
down. Or be late. Thank you, thank you, thank you!" He attacked Alfred with a
hug and grabbed is coat. "Really sir. This will change my life entirely." Before
Alfred could say anything Bary left the restaurant. Alfred was once again left
alone. He looked down at the floor and then up at the ceiling and then started
laughing. Laughing so hard he could barley stop. When he finally did he said "I
  guess you never can."
