Friends for Never
It glided through the water ever so daintily. Vibrant in color, and beautiful in shape. It had long yellow fins that smoothly tailed behind it. It was with many others, but stuck out like a glow stick it the dark.
“Mommy I want one!” No the mother responded. “We've been over this a hundred times; you are not getting that fish.” It was Sunday afternoon, and while most kids were getting ready for school the next day, Hayden and her mother were making one last stop to the local pet store. Every time they went into the store together, Hayden always went to the same fish in the same tank.
“Maybe next time, Mommy?” Hayden asked. “Probably not.” Her mother always responded. When they got in the car Hayden decided she was going name the fish. She didn't know if it was a boy or a girl, but she didn't care. The whole way home she listed off name after name after name. As they were pulling in their driveway, she finally came up with the name bubble. When they got inside, her mother told Hayden to go get ready for bed. When it was finally time to get up and go to school, Hayden marched into her moms room bright and early and announced “Mommy, I want to make a deal.” Surprised and startled, her mother responded “And what might that be Hayden Grace” Hayden responded confident and happy her mother didn't tell her to go away, “If I get an A on my social studies test, can I get the fishy?”  Her mother paused and thought for a second. “Yes, I think that’s a good deal” Her mother said knowing Hayden couldn't get an A in her worst subject.
So Hayden got on the bus and studied the most she had ever studied before. She took the test and returned home to share the news with her mom that she had gotten a B. her mother was happy; especially that now that she didn't have to buy the fish. Later that evening Hayden’s mom went to the pet store because they needed dog food. When they got there Hayden ran in, and her mother slowly walked in behind her. Hayden rushed into fish section, and when her mother walked in after she saw Hayden right at the same tank. But she also saw a sparkle that she had never seen before. Hayden’s eyes lit up when she saw the fish. Her mother wondered why such love for a fish? After seeing such happiness in Hayden, her mother decided that she was going to get the tank tomorrow and surprise her with the fish tomorrow when she got home from school tomorrow. “It’s time to leave” Her mother said. “Aw but we were barely here for twenty minutes.” Hayden responded upset. “No buts were going home.”
It was time for school, and Hayden had just gotten on the bus to leave. One second later her mother was out the door going to get the tank and the fish to surprise Hayden when she got home. She got back to the house and set the whole thing up but decided to wait to put the fish in to surprise Hayden when she got off the bus. Her mother saw the bus coming down the road, and went and stood on the front porch holding the bag with the fish in it. The bus came to a stop right at their drive way, and as Hayden took her first step down the steps, she saw her mom holding the fish. Her mom saw that sparkle in Hayden’s eyes when first saw the fish. Her mom was so happy that she had finally seen Hayden with the same happiness like she saw at the pet store. Hayden continued to get off the bus focusing all her attention on the fish. Right when she took a step to cross the road, a lady is a big white truck paying no attention at all hit Hayden dead on. She was instantly killed.
Her mother sprinted into the street still holding the bag with the fish. The lady was speechless, trying to accept what she had just done. Hayden’s mother was astonished, crying puddles onto the road, just watching her daughter get killed that quickly. Still trying to hold onto the bag to keep the fish safe, she was tempted to put it down. But she quickly realized she couldn't let something go that Hayden loved so much. After everything had been sorted out, Hayden’s mom slowly and depressingly started to walk back up to the house. When she got inside she wasn't really sure what to do. She was drenched in tears from her shirt, to her socks. She was just about to go sit down, when she remembered the fish. She picked up the bag watching it swim around ever so daintily. She slowly walked into Hayden’s room, and went over to the little tank that she had set up earlier that day. She carefully released the fish into the tank. Then she laid down on Hayden’s bed next to the fish tank, and watching him swim while spilling tears onto Hayden’s pillow.
