The Miracle
There was once a miracle which happened on a cold winter night in New York City. A man named Jerry, a homeless eighteen year old laying out on a parkbench, trying to stay warm for the night. His needs were very limited. He had no one supporting him, no money, no income, no shelter, no friends and he had dropped out of school at age of sixteen. Despite the fact, Jerry was contented and grateful for the little that he had. The big problem: he had had no education. Which meant he didn't know what he was good at, nor what he wasn't good at. He didn't know much about what he wanted to do with his life.
Jerry’s eyelids jolted open. He was awakened by the terrible screeching sound of a young lady’s screams. He woke up in fright to see an eerie looking man ripping into the lady’s newish looking, designer purse and shopping bags. The man was intimidating. He held a taser gun in a holster around his waist. The lady screamed for help . The man jerked out the taser gun. The gun came closer and closer to the lady’s pale skin. Inside of his own mind, Jerry was freaking out. Was the man going to tase the lady? Jerry couldnt just sit there and watch, he needed to do something. What was he to do? He had seen many fights in the city before, but he never had been involved with one, nor did he want to be involved with one.
Jerry glanced over to the dirty, old telephone pole. He knew there was no way of contacting the police right there, at that moment. Jerry stood up very calmly, and the lady soon saw him, but the robber couldn’t see him. Jerry ran to the man and took him down to the ground. Now, the man had started to scream.
“Get off me. Get off me!” he yelled.
The lady stood, calling for help. She reached into her purse and soon found her smartphone. Which then, she dialed the police. After all this disruption, soon a small crowd of cars surrounded around the park and the police rushed to the scene. They then took the robber away. The lady ran to Jerry, out of breath, but full of delight
“Thank you for saving my purse. My name is Linda. and what is your name?”
“Jerry,” he said.
“Well Jerry, I am so pleased that you were able to help me. What are you doing all alone out here in the city, on this cold winter night?”
“You should be indoors.”
Jerry looked ashamed ,and Linda soon realized that Jerry had been homeless. Out in the cold, living on the streets.
“Can I help you out? You did save me a lot of trouble by saving my purse.”
“I would love to treat you to dinner or give you some money, but I just got this money out of the bank, plus I am already late to pay my maid.”
“But, here!” shouted Linda, handing a small piece of paper over to Jerry. “It’s my business card. Swing by my office tomorrow and I will have some money waiting for you.”
Jerry knew he had saved this woman's money and purse from being stolen, but he didn't want to take her money.
He said, “No,thanks, it’s okay.”
But, Linda insisted and said, “I would feel absolutely terrible if I didn't give you anything because after all, you did save me a lot of money. He knew he could really use the money and it would help him out. Since he was such a generous person, he didn't feel like it was right to be given any amount of money for what he had done. He thought that he would help anyone out if they needed it. He didn't hope or wish to receive a reward whenever he did help someone out.
He said, “Are you sure? Do you really want to give me money just because I did one little thing for you?”
“Most definitely,” said Linda. “It’s the least I can do, I had a very large amount of money in my purse. If it weren't for you to save my purse, I would have lost all my money to pay my maid for the past three months. Please. It’s the least I can do.” Linda said again.
Linda handed Jerry some kind of ticket. Then, she ran off into the darkness and then yelled, “Don't forget to stop by my office, I have to run. Oh. and good luck. You deserve it!”
At first, Jerry didn't know what she meant by “Good luck” But then, he opened the palm of his hand, and there, lay a lottery ticket. Larry took out his bag of change and took out a single coin. He took a deep breath, then started to scratch away.
Jerry scratched the first two numbers off the card. The first number; one million. The second:fifty thousand. Furiously, Jerry threw the ticket to the ground and stared at it. He knew he wouldn't win. It was nearly impossible. He once pulled himself together and picked the ticket back up off of the ground and started to scratch to second row. First number: one million. Second number: also one million. His heart was beating so fast, as if it were going to fly out of his chest. He pulled the last number and it was one million. Jerry stood there in shock. He thought it was a joke. But he had actually won one million dollars!
Jerry didn't know what to do with the card or where to take it. He then went to a nearby telephone pole. Which then, he grabbed the small, crumpled up, business card. He found Linda’s number and started typing her number into the keypad. After a few rings, Linda picked up.
“Hello Linda, this is Jerry.” he said, “I am calling to tell you that the lottery ticket you gave me, well.... A sudden pause was brought to the conversation.
“Well what Jerry?” Linda said.
“Well I won! Linda, I won one million dollars,” said Jerry with much enthusiasm.
Linda screamed back.
The next day, Jerry and Linda went to the store to turn in the ticket and Jerry got the money. He then used his money to go to college as a police officer. Years later, Jerry and Linda became the greatest of friends. Jerry also met his love of his life and had three kids. Just one random act of kindness changed the rest of his life. After all,he had a success in his career.ame great friends. Jerry also met his love of his life and had three kids. Just one random act of kindness changed the rest of his life.
