After a long day of practice Stacy and her teammates decided if they won their basketball championship game against an undefeated, out of state team the following day they would all take a two week vacation to the mountains.
Their first championship win in over two decades brought extreme delight to Stacy and her friends. The mood quickly saddened when Stacy and Mariah were the only two people that were allowed to go because of the blizzard that was supposed to hit that night; Stacy sighed.
”Well atleast we will still have fun”, said Mariah.
While driving Stacy’s eyes became heavy going up the steep, winding road halfway up the mountain. Being the only people on the road, Stacy decided she could go quite a few miles over the speed limit even though the roads were becoming icy. The road became straighter as she closed her eyes for just what seemed like a second. When everything changed.
The car hit a patch of black ice and began to spin out of control, Stacy gripped the steering wheel in hope that she could regain control. They hit a guardrail, and plunged off the side of the mountain.
It must have been the next day when Stacy regained consciousness. She quickly realized that she was pinned between the steering wheel and seat. Hesitantly, Stacy turned her head to face the now empty passenger seat that had previously held Mariah. Stacy looked up to notice the body shaped hole in the windshield. She began to push her way out the hole in the windshield to where she found Mariah’s ice covered body laying nearly three feet from the car, she quickly realized that Mariah was dead. Stacy made her way down the road with minor scrapes and bruises. She began to feel uneasy as she realized they were so far up the mountain nobody was around for miles. Crying hysterically, she decides to stop and rest on the side of the road and began to realize she was drifting off into sleep and may not wake up; she quickly heard a familiar sound. The rumbling of the motor sounded faint but it gave her enough hope to walk closer to the noise.
Minutes up the road she quickly found a running car parked on the side of the road with a family of three inside. She walked up to the car.
“Can I borrow a cell phone?” asked Stacy.
“I was just involved in car accident and i need help”.
It was obvious the family was hesitant to help her.
In what seemed to take forever, the emergency vehicle approached her. Emergency responders picked her up and took her to the nearest hospital. Stacy quickly recovered. This saddened her, but not as much as losing one of her beloved teammates. Every basketball game after that was played in memory of Mariah.
