Tubing Trip Gone Wrong

“Oh gosh… what’s happening?” I muttered, as we slowly drifted towards the boat. The water was calm, and the scene was serene. Then, it all exploded into chaos. The boat jetted off through the water like a knife. Spinning, now faster and faster, the tube was rocking from side to side in our hectic twirling. A wild scream erupted from my throat, “WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEW!” as the tube rope whipped around in the air. A headache started to crush my temples. It was like someone was pounding on my skull with a sledgehammer. Then, the rope finally went rigid. My headache calmed down for a fraction of a second, then intensified as we rocketed off after the boat, wind howling through my ears. A spike of fear went through me as we flew over the wake to our left, flying through the air for a split second before crashing down into the water with a tremendous splash that fountained water all around us. We took a sharp turn over the wake, and the tube started to tip. “Lean forward!” I yelled as the tube turned upwards in the water. It was tipping more now.

Then the tube finally flipped over and I was dumped off the back and into the water painfully, hitting my head on the tube, causing my neck to crack. It wasn’t broken, but it hurt badly as the dark water enveloped me,  closing me off from the world. I cracked my eyes open and attempted to see something, but there was nothing, just blackness. All my senses were dulled. I could not hear, I could not smell, I could not feel, I could not see, and I could not taste.

I cracked open my eyes a second time, and moved my head all the way around, up and down, side to side, and every which way. Finally, I saw a glimmer of light above me. I swam towards it with all my strength, which was waning fast. My lungs burned dully. Then I ran into something underwater that spun me off deeper into the water. I saw a very faint glimmer of sunlight, swimming towards it with all my strength. Adrenaline filled me, and I pushed onward. My lungs burned as I swam, but I ignored it. Then I surfaced, or at least I should have. A net wrapped around my head as I broke the surface of the water. It was the tube, I was right under the tube! I sighed and went back under, a new breath in my lungs. I swam straight forward, and after swimming another few feet, I surfaced again.

Finally I was back up on the surface! I looked around for the boat, and saw it after a couple seconds. It was about 50 feet away, and I screamed for it. “Hey, over here!” “I’m over here!” They heard me and drove over. I climbed onto the boat, and they grabbed me a towel to dry off. I stood there for a second, teeth chattering, then I remembered to sit down. I waddled over to my dad, who hugged me to him as I sat down. “Wait…” I said, looking around the boat, “Where’s Sam?”

“He’s not here” said Jay. Jay is pretty blunt and to the point.

As we drove slowly towards the area where the tube first flipped, I saw a mop of blonde hair sitting on the water, like it was the water’s hair. I pointed at it frantically, and yelled out, “Over there, I think he’s over there!” Jay, who was driving, squinted in the direction I was pointing, and his eyes widened a bit when he saw what I was pointing at. He quickly turned the boat around and flew over the water  towards the hair. When we pulled up next to it, my dad grabbed him by the arms and pulled him onto the boat. He was conscious, but very drained, as we could see by the fact that he just flopped onto the boat seat after my dad gave him a towel. We were all reunited as we boated to the dock and then walked home in the darkness.
