Chills

Emily felt uneasy about going to Alaska. She feared all of the ice and the possibility of the freezing cold water touching her skin. It was her Grandpa Kirk’s, who Emily called Captain for short, idea.  Emily called Grandpa Kirk, Captain because he had been a fishermen his whole life and was the captain of his boat. Emily loved Captain with all her heart and knew the trip he had planned would be lovely time spent.
“Where are we staying?” Emily asked. It was the first time she had spoken since boarding the plane.
“It is called Indoor Icy Inn. They built a lodge right on the ice and cut a hole for ice fishing inside of your abode! I am beyond excited, Emily.” Captain said with cheer in his voice. Emily laughed and spoke with a hint of sarcasm, “If you are excited about it, then I am excited about it!”
Captain got resituated in the chair he had already been in for two hours and would be in for the next ten hours and laid his head back for a rest. The plane ride had been quiet and Emily could not fall asleep. She remembered what her mother always told her what to do when she had trouble getting to sleep, “Just think about something you are excited for or even scared for and imagine yourself doing it.”  With her mother in mind she thought about wolves and polar bears and the dangers of Alaska, and sure enough fell asleep.
She awoke to Captain shaking her to wake up. Over the intercom she heard a woman speaking,
“If everyone will please fasten your seat belts, we are experiencing some turbulence due to an unexpected snow storm. Thank you.”
Passengers were getting nervous from what she could see. Emily knew it was no big deal and the flight would be over soon. She buckled her seat belt when suddenly the plane shook violently. Her head thrashed back and forth. The remaining passengers were whipped around viciously when the intercom came back on,
“We are in some rough weather please hold on tight and remain calm.”   Emily did not know how to stay calm when just then after the announcement, a huge shift of the planes weight went to the left and they were upside down in free fall. One of the jets engine failed and mask were deployed, lights flickered and Emily heard screams all around. Emily tried to contain herself but she was genuinely terrified. She grabbed the air mask and put it on. Captain grabbed her hand and didn’t let go. The plane was heading down, but she was too afraid to look out the window. Her body and all other objects flew forward as she felt and explosion. The plane had impacted the cold Alaska terrain. Water was seeping into the plane, they were rapidly sinking.
“What do we do?” exclaimed Emily.
“Unbuckle your seatbelt, now!” Captain told Emily hoping others would do as well. Emily unbuckled as she saw the water getting deeper at her feet. She jumped on her seat and looked around for an exit. She jumped from seat to seat until she saw the emergency escape hatch.
“Over here! An exit!” Captain along with several others waded over. Emily turned the latch.
“No, wait!” A young women yelled, “The water!”
The water rushed in slamming Emily backwards. It felt like millions of needles that stabbed into her entire body. Slowly they pounded against the freezing water to get through. It was the coldest thing any of them had ever felt but, they knew they had a better chance against hypothermia than being stuck in a sinking plane. They finally swan out, not able to see the surface light. The survivors swam to what felt like upward, until they hit surface ice.
Emily could feel her legs then her entire body become numb. She knew the plane had to have broken the ice, but where? They were running out of oxygen with no sign of air. The intense cold caused dizziness, confusion, and her head to ache. She could not see, and needed a breath badly. Emily looked around and seen no sign of the others, not even captain. She knew this was the end.
Emily had no hope nor strength left. She said a prayer, said goodbye, and sank.
