Symbolism: My play symbolizes a families need to help each other, and to be with each other through all trouble and suffering. It is symbolized through the relationship between Kelsey and Ed.

Plot:
-Car accident involving a 13 year old boy names John
-Is in critical condition in the hospital
-Was in the passenger seat in a friends car and was hit on the passenger side by a mini-van
-Conflict: whether or not he will survive the accident aftermath

Setting/Scene:
[Jim is standing in the hospital waiting room near Johns room and Ed walks in. He had just called him and told him about what happened. He begins to talk to Ed about the situation and everything that's going on.]

Jim: [Waiting for Ed to walk in the room, tapping her foot on the floor] Ed.

Ed: Kelsey, what's going on?

Jim: I'm honestly not sure. They wont let me go in the-

Ed: Is he okay?

Jim: I don't know. I can't see him now.

Ed: Oh. I See. What about talking to a nurse? Someone? I can't just wait around if i know he's dying.

Jim: He'll be fine. He's not dying on us.

Ed: .... Well... what happened?

Jim: Sara called me earlier. She said John was driving in the car with a friend who just got his license.

Ed: So?

Jim: Well, his friend was being reckless and ran through a red light. A mini-van ran into the passenger door where John was sitting, his friend is fine, just a cut on his face and some glass in his arm. John on the other hand... isn't.

Ed: [Paces a little, taking all the information in.] Okay, so what should we do now?

Jim: Relax. Sit maybe. Your worrying doesn't change anything.

Ed: [Concerned Tone] So is he going to go under any type of surgery?

Jim: I heard he broke his right arm and leg. So, yeah, probably.

[Over the hospital intercom a voice says: Doctor Smith we need you in surgery room 401 A. Immediately.]

Jim: That's where Johns going!

Ed: [Worried Tone] Okay, okay. So that should mean things are progressing. He's getting better, maybe?

Jim: Maybe. I'm not the Doctor.

Ed: So... did Sara call you? She called me earlier, she sounded so worried. I can't believe she's not here. Of course her business trip happens to need to be during this tragedy.

Jim: She did. She can't make it back either. She's way too far away to get here in time. She's hoping for a good message back.

Ed: Then lets send her a good one.

Jim: Yeah, but, y'know we can't control that. But, we can try to stay positive about it.

Ed: Okay. [Starts pacing]

Jim: You're making me nervous. Everything is fine.

Ed: [Still pacing.] But you don't know that he's okay. He's going under surgery now, this is serious.

Jim: I know, I know. So we should be serious too.

Ed: At this point the only thing we can do today is just wait. We should go to the waiting area in the south hall.

[Ed and Jim Walk to the waiting area in the south hall and grab some coffee to calm down]

Ed: [Pours coffee in a cup] Want one?

Jim: Sure, thanks.

Ed: [Asks a question] Cream...Sugar?

Jim: Yeah. Both, please.

[Ed puts cream and sugar in coffee and gives it to Jim]

[Drinks coffee for at least 5 seconds]

Jim: [Drinking coffee and talking] So.. [Pause] how are things going with Sammy?

Ed: [Happy Tone] Good thanks. She just made it to sectionals in track. She's really excited. She's worked so hard for this.

Jim: Thats great! I remember that one time I saw her in track she was really good so I'm happy she's improving.

Ed: How's things going with you?

Jim: Good, good. I've been travelling a lot with work. It's stressful, but it has to be done. I'm just happy I could be here when this happened.

Ed: Me too.

Jim: I just wish Sara was here. It upsets me she couldn't make it, but at least we can take care of John when he makes it out.

Ed: That's why I'm happy were here. Its for the best of all of us. I can't even imagine how he'll feel when he wakes up.. and if he were to see no one here with him. That would break my heart.

Jim: Me too... I'm happy for all of us. I feel like this is a chance for us to bond...

Ed: Yeah, exactly.

[Pause]

[Intercom voice says: Doctor Smith to room 245A]

Jim: [Concerned Tone] What does that mean? Is he changing rooms with John or did he finish the surgery?

Ed: I don't know but doesn't surgery usually take longer than thirty minutes? I mean I'm not a doctor but it seems like it would considering the severity of the situation.

Jim: I guess... I mean he broke his arm and leg.. [Pause] so I guess so.

Ed: [Gets a call] It's Sara, hold on a second.
[talking on the phone] Okay. [Pause] Yeah, no i understand. [Pause] It's- Okay, bye.

Jim: Everything... alright?

Ed: Yeah. Nothing serious. It's not good news though. Sara's flight for Monday just cancelled, so she's going to be staying on her trip for another three days.

Jim: Well, [Pause] what does that mean for us?

Ed: It means that were responsible for the care of John. Were gonna have to take care of him when he finishes his surgery. If he-

Jim: He will finish the surgery.

Ed: Okay. I don't mind taking him in, if thats okay.

Jim: Whatever works for you works for me.

Ed: Okay, then it's settled.

Jim: [Pauses] Yeah.

Ed: [Phone rings again] Its Sara, again. [Answers call]
Hey Sara. [Pause] Im good thanks. [Pause] Oh really? Wow, thanks for telling me. Bye.

Jim: What did she say?

Ed: John is fine he's-

Jim: What a relief.

Ed: Yeah. He finished his surgery and he has just stabilized. Which means he'll make it.

Jim: I am so thankful everything went well.

Ed: Me too. I was so worried from the beginning I'm still in a little shock right now.

Jim: Now we just have to wait. I'll wait with you so we can take John back.

Ed: Okay great thanks. He might have to stay overnight at the hospital though. So you can leave if you'd like.

Jim: No, i'll wait. Were family and this is what we must do.

Ed: Thanks.

Jim: Of Course.
