"Hard Work Beats Talent, When Talent Fails To Work Hard"

I’m sitting in my living room playing Skyrim on my X-BOX 360. I just finished killing my first dragon so I pressed pause and saw that it was 6:30 in the morning so I went to the bathroom to take a shower. After I dried off, put some clothes on and brushed my teeth. I walked in the kitchen to pour a glass of coffee mixed with french vanilla creamer and five teaspoons of sugar. I lean against the wall, looked at the clock it was 7:15. Then I noticed an old T.V. from the late 80’s or early 90’s on the counter next to the refrigerator. My cat instinct kicked in and I just had to power it up and when the picture showed up I saw myself in my aunt’s house watching Spongebob Squarepants. Suddenly I was there on the couch. I was in my past.

I remember this day vividly, it was one of the scariest moments of my life. It was two days after I met two strangers Holly and Randy and there Pit Bull Rocko. They were old friends of my mother and aunt. They the two nicest people I have ever met. Randy gave his last dollar to me so I could buy a drink and Holly treated me like her own son. For the two days I have known they already had my trust but for fifteen minutes I felt like I had not known them at all.

I was just watching the episode of Spongebob where Patrick and him buy a giant T.V. just so they can play in the box. This is my favorite episode. I don’t know about you but when my favorite episode is on I am very happy. Then all of a sudden I hear a knock on the door. I would have been mad but I was able to pause my show. As I stood up, Randy and Holly were walking toward the door. I unpaused my show but when they walked into the front room they did not open the door. I heard them whispering and I became curious. I walked toward them and suddenly they ran to me and said “Don’t answer the door, hide it’s the cops.” That was, and still is, some of the scariest set of words I have ever heard. I wish I was in another memory but no, I’m in this one. Now my head has question running through it faster than Usain Bolt(Olympic Gold medal sprinter of 2012). Why are the cops here? Am I in trouble? Is it about that incident last week? What do I do? Should I act like I can’t hear them and keep watching Spongebob? Should I act like I’m in the bathroom? Should I clean up the house? Should I run out the back door? I decided to keep my rear end on the couch and finish watching Spongebob. What I didn’t know was that the cops asked my grandfather “May we go into the house” in which my grandfather replied I’ll bust down the door for you” and that is exactly what he did.

My grandfather was the first to see me and he asked “Colman what are you doing in here” I didn’t have an answer for him (I was just thinking I should have went into the bathroom) so they just pulled me out like a rag doll. Now I know in my little town of Everglades City, the most cops that are on duty is four cruisers each occupied by one cop. That day in the front yard there was six cruisers, one SUV, three German Shepherds, and about 14 officers. After my Grandpa busted down the door, hinges and all, they came in with shotguns and riot shields, which is stuff I thought they did not have in the arsenal. When I saw everything outside, I was wondering what Holly and Randy did for the law to react like this. At this point I didn’t have a clue where they may have went. They brought Rocko outside he didn’t put up any fight, probably surprised the 5-0. I knew one thing for sure I was scared.

They asked me a question “Is Holly and Randy inside”? I could have answered many ways. I was thinking about saying no then they might all leave, then Randy and Holly would be safe or they would find them and I might have been charged with harboring a fugitive as what my dad would tell me later on. I also could have answered who is Holly and Randy, but when they asked me this question all my emotions bottled up inside me. I didn’t want to betray these two strangers I met, but at the same time I didn’t want to get in trouble by lying to the cops. With tears coming down my face I answered a low sounding “Yes.”

About five minutes go buy and my grandfather is bombarding me with questions. “Who are they? What are you doing with them? Why didn’t you answer the door?” Finally they find them; they were hiding inside the back of a closet. When the pulled them out Randy was wearing a tank top and shorts, poor Holly was only wearing a sports bra and underwear. I looked around and saw Holly’s dad there, my grandpa, my uncle Clay,(grandpa’s brother) and some other people sitting there watching like it’s a brand new episode of Cops.

A week after the incident I found out that Randy and Holly forgot to tell their probation officer they were visiting Everglades City. A year later Holly was released from jail and is doing great with her family. Then suddenly I’m back at my house and the T.V. is gone I just stood there looking at a wall. I haven’t heard about Randy since then. I picked up my coffee, walked to the living room, saved my game then turned it off. I changed the input to A.V., I changed the channel to 45 and guess what, my favorite episode was on.
