The month was ending and I knew there was no time. The doors out where closing around me. I needed a way out.

Summer was ending and it would be my chance to step out of the normal years and start my life.

My life was beginning.

I still live with my family. I have another brother and a younger sister who also live with me and my mom while my dad is fighting in the war. We all miss him but mostly my sister, they were so close. I wish he would come back just to see my sister smile again she is never the same when he isn’t with us. My brother on the other hand, he could live with no one and nothing would change. He is so independent. He has a girlfriend that he has been dating for awhile but he works most of the time and when he gets home he scavenges for food in the fridge and then sleeps. I have been going to the school down the street for years since preschool, but now I have to grow up and break that routine.

I turned 19 and graduated high school and didn’t think I would have to change anything big because all I was thinking about was summer then. My summer was amazing you wouldn’t believe the adventures I went on. I had a girlfriend then.

My girlfriend and I were going to the beach on the sweet peaceful day it was in June. I went to go in the water with some of my friends and when I came back she was with some of her friends, which I was fine with because I don’t get bugged much because I understand guys and girls friendships. He was a close friend of mine too so I was fine with it until I called her a few nights later because she hadn’t talked to me that day and he picked up saying she had crashed at his house because she was drunk. Without telling him I went over to his house to pick her up and found them watching a movie sober cuddling in nude. I was nice about it to her but I demanded to never see his face ever again. He moved after that, with her, I don’t mind as long as he isn’t near me.

Girlfriends would be in my way of getting a job anyway. I didn’t need them. I may look online for a job. What do I search though? I’ll go on craigslist.

I don’t know what type of job I want, how am I suppose to choose with all these options? Maybe I’ll come back to this once I get to know what I’m good at or what to work with. How do people do this? I could go ask my mom what her first job was and she if I would be good at it too.

I had to wait for my mom to get home so I took a nap. She laughed at me when I said I wanted to know what her first job was so I could get some ideas. She told me to go ask some kids what they want to be when they grow up. then she got serious with me and told me that she was a waitress for her first job in college because her friends were the cooks. She also wrote in her free time and tried to become some type of writer but never showed anyone. I didn’t know if a waiter was the right job for me, where would I wait? She said she did it because of her friends, I’ll see where my friends work and she if they have any ideas for me.

The next day I took my time getting up then texted my best bud, Austin. He didn’t text back till lunch time telling me to head over to Dunkin Donuts to sit and talk.

Once I got there I was talking to him about how I didn’t know how to start my ‘out of school’ life. He also laughed at me. I feel so much like a fool asking other people for guidance on how to start my life. I should know how to do this.

He told me he worked here at Dunkin Donuts and that this was his first job.
“You know what would be cool man? If you worked here with me. We need a new cashier if you think you can do it.” he told me.

“Do you think you can get me the job?”

“Sure man, chill here I’ll go get the manager” Austin said then walked slowly away from the table. I started freaking out I don’t know what to say am I suppose to say I have worked before? Would he not let me work here because I was friends with Austin? I almost started to sweat. I chilled out after I saw Austin back behind the counter talking to someone then pointing at me and asking them to come talk to me. Then from behind the counter came out Austin and a girl. Was the girl the manager? She had beautiful long hair that fell perfectly from her ponytail, under her hat. I read her name card;
Manager: Grace

“So you are the Caleb, who wants a job here?”

Yes that is me ma’am,” I said confidently.

“hmmm... Austin I think we have a new cashier” she said smirking then walked back behind the counter. Austin sat down again and said stuff about how she is a pretty cool boss as long as you don’t get her mad. I smiled the rest of the day knowing I had something to do. Austin said I could start working tomorrow so going to sleep was pretty hard for me and I had to start at 8am.
Saturday morning 7:50 I woke up and hopped up as quick as I could, got dressed and jumped in my car and drove to work for the first morning. I walked in the door right at 8 and Grace was waiting smiling to greet me. She could tell I was tired because I didn’t fully smile back but she just giggled and gestured me toward the counter. Grace should me everything in the kitchen just to make sure I didn’t have any questions then she introduced me to everyone walking in and told me a little about them. Austin walked in a little late and she snapped at him because everyday he would come in and he just said “I’m sorry I try to look good in the morning,” and smiled. I looked back at her smiling but she looked at me and I kinda coughed the smile away. She then told me everything I had to do when someone came in and that if I had a question or messed up that it was okay just as long as I asked someone. I smiled and got on my way with the first day.
I was doing great me and Austin hung out at lunch and Grace came over after Austin left to talk to me. I said I think I liked this job and she said she had been working here for so long because she needed some money for her boyfriend at the time but he just took her money and left. I didn’t ask what he wanted it for I thought that would too much but she hinted that it wasn’t very good. I guessed it might have been drugs or alcohol but I didn’t want to guess. Grace then asked me why I needed this job. I said spare money. I think she knew I was lying because she giggled again. Then a customer walked in and she said we should get back to work. I threw my lunch away and told her I thought she was a good manager and kept this place in good condition. She turned around and smiled at me to say thank you, I smiled back and got to work.
It was 6pm and Austin said that Mike was coming in to take the rest of my hours till 10 every Mon. - Sat. but that I had to work till 10 on Sunday because they don’t have anyone else. I didn’t mind as long as Grace was here. Me and Austin headed out and said she is always there because she doesn’t have any where else to go. I felt bad for her someone like her should be out there and be known. I want to help her.
After a few weeks of getting to know her and finally hanging with her and her friends outside of work I got to tell her that I think she should be someone. She could be an actor or a model I told her I could set something up because I know she could be someone that I would never be. Grace didn’t agree she was anyone until I told her I found someone online that could help her. I messaged a Jim from Cali. He said she would be perfect for a new movie he is making. Jim told us that the action movie would come out next year at the earliest. She started talking more to him about editing the script. Grace turned into his co-writer for him and was the star in the next movie she moved down to Cali.
My life meant something because I helped Grace be someone. Years had gone past and surprisingly Austin had become the new manager, I was still working there but I was happy. I saw her movie with Austin one night and when I left the local theater everyone loved her. Grace was a star, I just wished I could have told her. Austin was acting weird when we left. He knew something I didn’t, he was laughing. I asked him what. Then a huge crowd of people was running toward the center of the theater lobby holding paper. A beautiful tall girl with long gorgeous hair flowing perfectly against her bright blue striped dress walked toward me and Austin.
Hugging me she said, “I missed you Caleb! thank you so much!” I realized it was Grace hugging me. I held her tight and said, “No problem, as long as you are happy and are somebody.” She was crying. Everyone stepped back and let her go with me and Austin out to her ride. She was leaving to go back to Cali. but she was always with us. Grace had my number and after every Friday afternoon she would video chat me and Austin about her life and how she would come down again. We made her someone which made us almost famous. Articles online of her had featured us as her started and Jim would put a special thanks to us for giving Grace to him.
