Annual Pageant by Sabrina N
It was that time of the year. Every teenage girl in the town of Picklenut, was preparing themselves for the annual pageant. Jessica was not like the other girls in town, because she was born with male parts. She always imagined herself walking down the stage, and winning the grand prize. It consisted of $10,000. With that money, Jessica would be able to have surgery, to not just feel like a female, but also look like one. Jessica’s real name was Liam. She had long black hair, pale skin, and big dark brown eyes. At auditions, she was asked to walk with heels and answer a few questions about feminism. “Does a feminist have to be a female.” said the judge with a sarcastic face. Jessica stood up from the chair.
“A male can be a feminist if he truly believes that he should have the same rights as a female,” said Jessica as she headed out the door. The next day, she received a phone call from the judge, telling her that practice was going to start, on the upcoming Monday. Jessica was outraged, however, she decided to just prepare for practice. She spent everyday walking in heels and even jogged on the treadmill, at an average pace. On Monday, she went to practice and noticed that many of the girls there, already had their little cliques. One of the main girls that had been competing for the past three years, went up to Jessica.
“This is an all girl competition!” blurted Hennessey.
“Awww, I didn’t know this was a competition for older women,” said Jessica as she looked at her eye bags and forehead lines. Hennessey made a straight face and slapped her right cheek. The day of the pageant, all the girls were getting their makeup and hair done by a professional. Jessica’s makeup consisted of gold colors, and loose hair waves, with a few Baby’s-breath flowers. Her dress was long, black, and silky with some lace on the top. It was six o’clock when all the girls were being lined up. They gave all the girls flashcards with questions on them, and they had to write their answers, on the back of the card. Jessica put her flashcards in the basket and went back to the line. Hennessey was called to the stage first and was given her flashcards. When she began to answer, Jessica began to notice that Hennessey had stolen her answers, and she was furious. When she was called up, the judges used her real name, “Liam.”
“Why do you want to be Miss Picklenut?” said one of the main judges. Jessica began to explain her story and said how she always felt that she was a female on the inside, even if she didn’t look like one. She told the judge that she was going to use the money to have surgery. The judges began to tear up and went up the stage to crown Jessica. “The new Miss Picknut.”
