Sticky
We had another one of our famous fights yesterday. As usual, I slunk off into the pencil case while Mother yelled nonsense. It sure wasn't easy being a pad of sticky notes with a stapler for a mum.
"Listen, kid. What you did back there was really out of line!"
"No it wasn't, Mother! Why can't you just trust me?"
"Your sticky notes are gonna fall off Ms. Notepad in about a day. You should've let me staple you!"
"She asked for my help. I can do it myself, I'm super sticky."
"But my staples can make your notes stay for longer!"
Once again, I ended it there with a zip and a sigh before drifting off to sleep on Eraser. His mum, Mrs. White-out, doesn't really appreciate the work that he does either.
Today, though, was another day. I woke up with a grimace as my corner bumped into Sharpener. It wasn't exactly heaven, living in a crowded sack of a pencil case. At least I didn't have to live with Mother. She was too big to live with us. In fact, I was happy that I didn't have to live with any annoying and nosy relatives, unlike Pencil and her twelve cousins.
"Time for work." Eraser nudged me, a big grin on his face. Was he my friend? I wasn't sure.
I sauntered out onto the desk as Mother put in her staples.
"Hi."
"Hi? I didn't raise you to be so rude." She glared at me. The longer I looked at her, the more menacing she became. Her twisted features grew even more grotesque as her eyes from hell burned into mine. Her mouth curled into a dark hole as she opened it to shriek at me. "You should say good morning, sweetie."
"Whatever. I don't want to work today."
Her expression changed into a look of utter disappointment. She frowned while a shallow breath escaped her lips. Her head seemed to shake and droop with annoyance. "It's always nice to take a break. You don't have to go, dear."
"Gee, thanks." I said sarcastically. Was it really such a tough choice for her?
I trudged towards the cushioned bulletin board and ripped off a sticky note.
"Let me do it!" Mother rushed over and grabbed me. Her staples stuck into my notes, tearing holes.
"Stop! Just stop! It hurts!" I rushed away from her, almost crying. She gasped at me, her eyes widening.
"I'm sorry! Baby, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to! Please, forgive me, I'm so sorry..."
"Whatever. Just let me stick it on, I gotta go see someone." I sighed before reaching up towards the board again.
"Wait, but I can help you." She tried grabbing my note again, her sharp staples glinting in the desk light.
"Whatever! Just...just listen. I can stick my notes by myself. I don't need you. So stop wanting to staple my notes!" I screamed while scrambling away from her reach. Why didn't she understand?
"Please! You're still so young. You're only a teenager!" Mother cried at me, trying to inch closer. Were those really tears falling from her eyes? Was that really regret in her voice? Because good. That's what she deserved. I turned away from her and jumped off the desk.
"Where are you going?!" She followed me every step, as always.
"Don't follow me." I stalked out of the room after snapping at her. One of my notes scrunched up in anger. I pushed all the other objects out of the way as I stomped my way into the living room, where Telephone was resting on the coffee table.
"Hey, can I make a call?" I mustered up as much politeness as possible.
"Sure, kiddo. Come on up."
I jabbed in the number while angry thoughts swirled in my head. The beep of the phone rang clear and loud.
"Hello?" I immediately melted at the sound of her beautiful voice across the phone.
"Hey babe. We're still on for tonight?"
"Yes. I can't wait. I love you!" Her voice was like honey.
"Love you too." I hung up the phone, a smile slowly appearing. It was going to be great tonight.
"Who was that?" Telephone asked and clicked the phone back into place.
"My girlfriend. She's my world." I grinned and sat down next to him.
"Getting it on tonight?" He winked mischievously. I laughed a bitter laugh.
"She's meeting my mum tonight. I'll tell Mother later."
"What's your girl like?"
I thought about her. Her beautiful chuckle. Her charming wit. And them looks! Her clearness. Her zigzags. And her strips. Her sticky, sticky strips, all stuck together in a roll. We were made for each other.
"Hey, snap out of it!" Telephone's monotonous, booming voice made me jump.
"Actually, can I make another call?"
"Here."
This time, I punched in the number of another woman. It took three beeps for her to pick up.
"Mother?"
"Babe! Are you ok? You never call, is something wrong?"
"I'm fine, Mother. I just gotta ask you something."
"Yes, of course! Ask away."
"Can I bring someone home tonight?"
"You mean like a friend?"
"She's more like my girlfriend..."
"You have a girlfriend?! Wh-why...but yo-you've never..."
I chuckled before interrupting her. "Mother. Is that ok?"
"Well, I mean, of course! I just never thought that you would ever..."
"She's coming at 8. Bye." I hung up the phone for Telephone, a big grin slowly spreading on my face. Mother would get what she asked for in a few hours. Wouldn't it be just the best thing ever to see the look on Mother's face when she sees who I'm bringing home tonight?

This mother and son relationship has been seen in movies and in real life many times, but I thought a little 'change' could make things more interesting. I hope people can see this relationship from a point of view that hasn't been shown as often!
