In the deep depths of the ocean a storm was brewing in the kingdom of Atlantica. The redheaded Prince Ariel and his father King Triton was at it again. Their loud raspy, scary, and fierce voices filled the castle. The people of Atlantica knew to stay in their houses when the King was mad and they all knew what they were arguing about and it was over the thing Ariel despises the most. Ariel has always been a rebellious Prince  and he doesn't want to marry a woman he doesn't love.He knows his Father just wants him to settle down and take over the throne of Atlantica but he will not marry one of his father's hand picked suitors. He will be king when he is ready but for now he just wants to have fun and explore the unknown . After the argument passed he went to his room and looked out into the wide open ocean filled with mystical and beautiful creatures but also the home of danger too. He admired all the creatures and loved the way of life in the kingdom. The Prince jumped and his eyes opened wide when the door to his chambers was opened and to his surprise in front of him stood his father and beside him stood six beautiful women.
Ariel was shocked and knew why they were here and said “Dad how many times do I have to tell you that I will not marry any of your stupid  suitors.”
The king was shocked at his son´s response to the girls and said “Ariel do not be like this.”
He just looked at his dad and his face looked as if it would explode any minute.
“I am sick and tired of this, if you want me to marry so bad then just leave me be so I can actually have time to fall in love”said Ariel.
King Triton  didn't like to see his son hurt and lonely. He knew he should leave him be so he ushered the girls towards the door and left shutting the door behind him leaving his son alone in his room. Ariel needed to calm down so he decided he would swim off his anger. He swam gallantly and passed many of the citizens of Atlantica, coral, and he swam passed the gateway of the kingdom. He stopped before the gate which symbolized freedom. He wants the freedom to find his own path, his future wife, and the freedom to rule.
“Slow down your highness”said a voice that startled Ariel.
“Sebastian what are you doing here?”
Sebastian looked at the prince and said “I followed you it's my job to protect you.”
Ariel loved the dedication and loyalty Sebastian has shown since he became a royal protector. Even though he was just a crab he was a loyal friend.
“Prince we need to head back to the castle your dad is probably worried.”
“Sebastion not yet I want to explore more and be free for once.”
He didn’t wait for Sebastian's response he just began to swim and beneath him below in the dark deep water a light was shining onto what looked like a shipwreck. He began to swim towards it enchanted by it even though he has seen many shipwrecks before. This one looked different from the others it seemed to enchant him and lore him as if he was prey heading into a trap.
“Ariel do not go down there your dad will kill me if I let you put yourself in danger, come back!”
Ariel ignored Sebastian and continued to swim towards the ship. The ship was magnificent and big. His jaw dropped when he came upon the site of a mirror and on it was engraved the Magic Mirror that beholds all . He never saw such beautiful things before and he took his eyes off the mirror and looked at the beautiful tapestry  near the stairway. The picture was of a beautiful baby girl and two figures holding her with wide and bright smiles on their face. He was amazed by the different features the humans had. They had legs and it entranced him. He dreamed of having legs and being able to walk and do whatever he wanted to. Ariel knew who could give him what he wanted but it was dangerous and it wouldn't be easy. The last time he saw her she told him she loved him  and he didn't feel the same way so they parted ways. He missed hanging out with her and he hasn't seen her in two years. It would be great to see her again he thought so he decided to go.
Sebastian looked at him and knew the prince was up to no good and he said “Ariel let's go this place is creepy and guards are probably looking for you.”
Ariel knew he was right but he said “Okay we're going don't be so crabby but before we go back I want to go visit an old friend.”
Sebastian looked suspicious of the prince and said “Fine but let's hurry”
They left the sunken ship and started on the way to the dark part of the ocean. Eels swam around them and all of a sudden a blue and yellow fish darted at the prince.
“Woah girl, Flounder” said the prince.Flounder is like a tornado of destruction.
Sebastian stared at the clumsy fish and doesn't understand why the prince likes the clumsy, chaotic, and reckless fish.
“Ariel long time no see” said Flounder.
Ariel laughed and said “We just saw each other two days ago”.
“Flounder we are in hurry so please leave.” said Sebastian.
Flounder smiled and grinned at Sebastian and said “Well I  guess you didn't miss me Mr.crabby”
Ariel laughed and Sebastian frowned and said “Well I might if you would leave me be and give me time to miss you.”
Flounder waved her little fin and swam in a circle and winked at him and said “Well I guess I will let you go ,have fun.”
Sebastian was always amazed by the fish even though he won't confess it. She made him happy and smile every time she was around. Even though she was a fish and he was a crab he was undeniably in love with Flounder. Ariel continued to swim towards Ursula's house and after a few minutes they arrived. . He  knocked on the door and it creaked open. A creature with tentacles emerged and eels swarmed around her.
“Long time no see my prince, what can I do for you?” said Ursula.
Ariel responded and said “Hi Ursula  I have a favor to ask of you.”
“Well what is it my love” said Ursula.
“I want legs” said Ariel.
Ursula looked at the prince with a mischievous, cunning ,and evil smile. She wanted something from him also and this would be the perfect opportunity. She agreed to give him legs in return for marriage with her. The prince was reluctant at first but then he thought of life as a human and concluded the reward was greater than the consequence. He didn't want to marry the evil Ursula but he finally agreed to it and the deal was struck. The eels started to dance the electric tango and started singing the merfolk wedding anthem. Sebastian's eyes popped out of his head surprised and shocked by the prince's decision. Ursula handed the prince a potion in which he is supposed to drink when on land.
“Well have fun on your adventure the next time I see you will be when we wed which will be in ten days” said Ursula.
Ariel and Sebastian left the house of his soon to be wife and the trip back to the gate of the kingdom was silent. He stopped at the gate knowing he needed to leave now so he can enjoy his legs but Sebastian stared at him with sad eyes. In the distance a ship crashed and could be heard as if a thunderous storm just arrived. Ariel took off and sped through the water as if nothing could stop him . Sebastian didn't follow the prince for he knew that the prince would not listen to him so he kept going on into the kingdom. He arrived at the castle not knowing what to tell the king.
The patrols were increased and he knew why, they were looking for the prince. Sitting on the throne was King Triton he was worried something happened to his son. He couldn't lose Ariel he is all Triton has left since the loss of his wife. He loved Athena and missed her dearly and he has hated humans ever since they took her from him and Ariel. He thought what if the humans captured him but then breaking the silence a red familiar creature arrived, Sebastian. Triton  swam rapidly to him and asked him what happened. Sebastian told him the whole story and in anger the King broke a near statue when he threw his magical Triton.
“Why would he do that to me and his kingdom?” said the king.
Sebastian left the king to allow him to calm down.On the other side of the ocean Ariel just arrived at the scene of destruction and horror. He raised his head out of the water and began to search around to see if there were  any survivors.
On a crate he spotted a dog and a woman. He swam to her and she was unconscious so he brought her to land and waited till morning but he drank the potion beforehand so she wouldn't discover his true form. Her black wavy hair and icy blue eyes entranced him. The human awoke and her eyes grew big when she saw Ariel laying on the ground next to her. Ariel told her the whole story how he saved her and her dog. She told him her name is Erica and thanked him. She invited Ariel  to her castle which was huge and magnificent. Ariel was surprised she was a princess but her beauty was one of a kind.
The servants and the royal family welcomed Ariel with thanks and kindness. Ariel was new to the human world and legs but he learned to adapt and observed the people and his surroundings. It was as if time flew by fast in three days he was to marry Ursula but for some reason he felt a strong tie to Erica and every time he saw her his heart fluttered. The prince and princess has spent all their days together hanging out in town, going on dates, and going to the beach since he has arrived . His fiery red hair and handsome strong body entranced her and she realized she loved him. On the last day they sat on the beach watching the sunset and Erica was leaning her head on him. Ariel leaned in and kissed her but then abruptly in the ocean a sound of a splash breaks up their romantic moment. To Ariel's surprise its Ursula  and a beautiful tail now embraced her body where her tentacles once were . Entranced by her  and determined to keep his promise he stands up and walks towards her and jumps into the water turning his legs into a tail to meet his soon to be mermaid bride and Erica yells at him.
“Ariel I love you  where are you going?” said Erica.
With no response Erica watched her fiery redheaded prince swim away and disappear into the blue magnificent ocean while slowly her heart broke into a million pieces.

The author's comments:

As a child I watched The Little Mermaid and I loved it. I wrote this fractured fairy tale story for a class that I love and the goal was to recreate and change up a original fairytale. I wanted the villian and the main character to have a happy ending and for the main character to make a choice between love or keeping a  promise. The moral that was important to me was always keep your promises and no matter how hard the decision is the answer is the easiest. I hope people get the same moral out of the story and realize that any story can be change if a thought is created and used.
