Once long ago there were two gods that fell deeply in love. Their names were Grumio and Poppaea. The two had grown up together and had always been the best of friends. Their falling in love was a blissful fate. After a few thousand years together, the young couple decided it was time to start their family on Mt. Olympus. Grumio, the God of Color, and Poppaea, the Goddess of Plants, a match made in the stars.
As you know, all the two wanted was to live together on Mt. Olympus. This, however, was not possible because they were approached by Gaia.  Who, upon seeing them, immediately blocked their way to the sacred mountain. “Grumio and Poppaea! Before you come to live on Olympus there is something you must do for me.” Gaia, being the mother of the world, was very well respected and had power over all gods on Olympus. “I have recently created a new land to support life and to help it flourish. This is a planet of my own invention. The Earth, as I am naming it,  is going to be a home for people. These people will look like us gods and goddess, but will have no power or godly status. Even with my radiant powers, I can only create the world. I need the two of you to paint the world. Dress it with every color the eye can perceive! After you complete this, you will ascend to Olympus!”
Taken back by this sudden news, Grumio and Poppaea wanted nothing more than to curse the goddess and discard their new assignment. However, their better judgement won out and they quietly agreed. Once they were alone, Poppaea spoke with a hopeful, yet defeated voice, “Grumio, everything will be ok, we can start our family on this new Earth. We can have children to help us.”
The godly pair eventually agreed that they would have a child, in hopes that they could make their dreams a reality. The parents assigned him the color red. Excitedly they prepared a magnificent nursery decorated with poppies throughout. Wonderous vines of roses tangled into a surprisingly soft crib. And the sun lightly leaked through the trellis like walls. It was perfect. Finally, after what seemed like years their first child was born. Poppaea gave birth to a fiery son named Ignis, who wanted nothing more than to color the world and please his parents. When he grew old enough, Ignis darted around splashing red all about. He was very quick with his job, and colored many things a vivid red.
Time passed as the three divine figures worked tirelessly to breathe color into the Earth. With sadness, Grumio and Poppaea realized their job was far from over. As the seemingly obvious answer, they decided to have another child. With just as much excitement as the first time, another charming nursery was prepared. Grumio and Poppaea diligently picked the color orange for their next child. So quite fittingly, the nursery was decorated with magnificent marigolds, lilies, and begonias. Orange trees were planted around the soft flowery crib. Through the small grove of sweet smelling trees, the sky could be seen. Soon Poppaea had the second child, a charming daughter named Aliquam. The parents were overjoyed that their workload had been eased, and their family had grown. Their daughter spent her days roaming about for animals and plants that she could grace with a burning orange. Each taking their own time and precision.
As strange as it seemed, even with two children, the Earth was not yet ready. Hundreds of miles had been brushed with magnificent colors, but there was not enough. With their time on Olympus seeming only farther away, Grumio and Poppaea decided to have yet another child. This time they thought carefully through their color choice, finally deciding on yellow. Another nursery was lovingly prepared filled with daffodils, sunflowers, and daisies. Sunshine beamed through the nursery, and the decorative flowers flourished. Soon another daughter named Aurea was born. With glowing yellows and golds painted in the world, the job was one step closer to being done.
Grumio and Poppaea started to grow weary of their time on Earth. They despised living unlike any of the other gods. Although they were overjoyed with the tremendous progress their children had made, it wasn't enough. Once again, Grumio and Poppaea prepared for the birth of a child. The baby grew larger and larger but still had not yet been assigned a color. Much to their surprise, what seemed like one child was actually twins! Two little boys had been born, named Caelum and Viride. With much more consideration, Poppaea and Grumio decided that Caelum should be assigned the color blue, and Viride the color green.
After some time had blown by, the two brothers could always be found competing for their parents’ affection. Both trying to color the world before the other. As the twins grew into teenagers, their fighting escalated. Caelum wanted more blue flowers to be planted, but Viride always insisted on a sparkling green. As Grumio and Poppaea watched their sons constantly disagree, they began to wonder what they could do. Consistent fighting filled the once serene breeze.
“Viride! For the last time I will tell you, the creeks and oceans are not to be green! Each drop of water will be prepared as blue, and put together by me,” Caelum snapped.
With no hesitation, Viride fought back, “Caelum! Why do you insist on this? You know nothing about color! Just stick to the few organisms you have claimed as blue! I will take the oceans as green, for I am superior to you!”
Finally one day Grumio had had enough of his sons behaving like little children. The family had already wasted too much time on Earth. Standing on the edge of a small mountain, he bellowed at them, “Enough! In order for the world to ever be ready, you need to stop this fighting. At once!”
Shaken up by their father’s words, Caelum and Viride did not curse one another for three days. Without the two boys fighting, Poppaea and Grumio could rest peacefully. During the three days, an astounding amount of work was accomplished, and all seemed right with the world. Then as sure as the sun rose, the brothers began to argue again. This time, however, was more violent than ever before. “I get the animals! They will all be blue,” Caelum proclaimed.
“No Caelum, that is impossible. I have the animals in my power!” Viride argued back.  Unable to bear a minute more, Poppaea and Grumio stormed down to the sandy beach where the brothers fought. Seeing their parents gushing with anger, the twins hesitated for only a moment. Rushing up to Poppaea and Grumio, they begged for forgiveness. All while quaking in fear from their all powerful mother and father.
“Silence! Caelum, Viride, you seem to disagree with the rules Grumio and I have worked hard to build. You not only disrupt me and your father, but you are preventing the world from new life. As gods, this is not acceptable and will result in punishment. Viride! You will forever be anchored to the ground. Color it way you like, but you may never leave. Caelum! For your punishment, you will forever be tethered to the sky. You may also color it what you like, but know that you can’t leave,” Poppaea demanded.
Even with the brothers pulled apart, Grumio, Poppaea, and their children were able to color the earth. It took much longer than they had expected, but they were overjoyed to have finally finished. “Poppaea! Ignis, Aliquam, and Aurea! We have done it! The earth is ready!” Grumio shouted to his family. Excited hollers erupted from the gods and goddesses.
“Wait!” added Ignis, “Will Caelum or Viride join us on Mt. Olympus? They too have worked tirelessly with us all this time.”
Grumio and Poppaea considered this. “ Their arguing disrupted our work and slowed us down, but we would not have finished without them. So yes, if Caelum and Viride wish to join our family, they may. However, if they argue even once more on Olympus, they will never be allowed back in!” Poppaea explained.
At that moment, the two brothers gathered with their family again. “Thank you forgiving us! We promise to not fight, ever again,” they gratefully chimed.
After staying in one spot for so long, the twins left a rich saturation on their territory. Caelum’s mark can be found all throughout the sky, a crisp light blue in the day and a deep and dark blue at night. Viridi's can also be found spread across grassy knolls, or in valleys between great mountains, with a rich green color.
