Looking For A Smile

They lived in Moonlight city, a big city with the biggest school Moonlight Middle School. Every morning Johnny would arrive at school in a taxi accompanied by his mother. Johnny hated walking up to the front door of his school holding his mother’s hand because he would always see kids laughing and pointing at him for holding his mother’s hand. They would always walk up to the same big door with the same big red words reading “Welcome to Moonlight Middle School”. Big schools like that can be intimidating for small, nice kids with little to no friends.
Johnny was a small canadian boy with brown curly hair and big blue eyes. He had only one friend, Owen. Owen was a small, chubby, boy who was missing his front teeth and had very light brown hair. Johnny sat right next to Owen in every class they had together. During lunch Johnny and Owen sat at a table by themselves and ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with the crust cut off made with all the love in the world by their mothers. Johnny had every class with Owen except for Spanish class. He sat at a table by himself everyday in Spanish.
A few months into his 6th grade year, Johnny noticed a new student in his Spanish class. Her name was Shawna. She was a small little Mexican girl with long, luscious, black hair. A few more weeks went by and everyday Johnny noticed she sat by herself in the back corner of the classroom. After Johnny noticed that, he kept looking over at her several times a day and saw the same thing. Not once did she laugh, or even crack a smile. That was hard to do especially when their teacher cracked jokes all the time. Johnny wasn’t a very funny kid, so achieving his goal wasn’t as easy as anticipated.
A few days later Johnny decided to eat lunch with Shawna. Johnny introduced himself and Owen to Shawna. Lunch was pretty quiet that day for them. The next day they all ate lunch together again. The same thing went on all week, some small talk was had but nothing special. It took a week for Johnny to try to talk to Shawna in Spanish class. Eventually their grades started to slip because they were always talking. Johnny had finally made another friend. Johnny, Owen, and Shawna hung out all day everyday. Johnny had never met happier.
They thought they would be friends for the rest of their lives. But then came summer. Owen and Johnny hung out everyday during the first week of summer. They weren’t sure where Shawna was, maybe something had happened. The two of them went to knock on her door at her house to see if something happened. Her grandma opened the door, Shawna wasn’t there. Her grandma informed them that she had been at the hospital all summer. Shawna was diagnosed with cancer.
The rest of summer Johnny and Owen he to visit their friend. They brought her lunch everyday. Even with life at an all time low, they continued to make each other smile and laugh. Johnny and Owen lit up her darkest of days.
Shawna got sicker with every passing day. When summer ended, Johnny and Owen had to start 7th grade without Shawna. Even with school starting they still found time to see her in the hospital. They waited until after school to eat, they continued to bring and eat lunch with Shawna everyday. They did that everyday until two months into the school year. Shawna passed away on October 1st. Johnny and Owen both spoke at her funeral. They both made sure to eat lunch at her grave once a month. They did that for the rest of their lives.
