2003, In a small neighborhood in Houston, Texas their lived a boy named Laurence. He loved football from a young age. More specifically the position of the Quarterback. Laurence had 3 older brothers that played basketball and all got College offers. Everyday when Laurence got home from school he begged and begged his dad to let him play football. The conversation went a little like this. “Dad please sign me up for football, I’ll do anything!” Laurence pleaded. “Son, you’re too young I don’t want you to get hurt at such a young age and be permanently injured!” Said Laurence’s Dad. “Once you’re in middle school you’ll be able to, I promise!” Said his Dad. Laurence would play catch with his friends at the park as much he could to make sure he was ready for his chance. Years of this had passed when one day he woke up and knew something was off. He didn’t know so he thought he should just continue about his day. He got to school, it was the 3rd to last of day of his Elementary School experience! He was so excited to start middle school. When he got to school he was immediately escorted to the office. He was greeted by his mother whom looked like all her color had been sucked out. “Today while your dad was driving to work, a semi-truck swerved off the road and collided with him,  Your dad I’m sorry to say passed on the way to the hospital.” said the Counselor. Laurence immediately balled his eyes out. When he got home he was accompanied by all of his brothers grieving. When football season rolled around his Mom let him know he couldn’t play because the family was struggling to keep ends meet. Laurence didn’t even feel the urge to beg or anything. He just accepted the reality and tried helping his Mom as much as he could. Laurence’s brothers all managed to get enough money for him to play in 8th grade. Laurence was a natural, had offers to play at private high schools in Texas. Laurence chose to stay in Houston, and play for his public school. The home life for Laurence was very difficult. All of his brothers were off in college and he had to balance work, his education and football. All of this was tough for a 14 year old. His daily schedule would be wake up at 5:00am and delivers newspapers for 2 hours. Clean up a little and get to school by 7:30am. At 3pm he finished school and went right to weightlifting or practice until 6:30. He would eat dinner until 7:30, and start his homework until 9. Once finished he would go right to bed. During school Laurence was bullied for being so poor, and made fun of for the way he dressed. One day after practice his sophomore year he was called into the Coach’s office. “Laurence big fella, how are you doing?!” Coach Vert asked. “I'm alright Coach, how are you?” said Laurence. “I'm fantastic! Couldn’t be better! Listen Laurence one of the Coaches told us they saw you biking around their neighborhood tossing newspapers, was that you?”. Laurence was so embarrassed. His gaze immediately lowered towards the ground. He tried to make out words but nothing would happen. He froze! Coach Vert repeated “Well was it Son?”. Laurence took a deep breath and explained everything he’s been through the past couple of years. “Well Coach...” he said with his voice shaking. “My dad passed away a couple of  years ago, it's been tough on my mom to make ends meet especially with my brothers going to college.” Coach Vert’s eyes filled with emotion. Coach Vert immediately got up and gave him a hug. Coach’s voice now shaky he said “We will have a fundraiser and all proceeds will go to you and your family”. Their fundraiser idea was to sell coupon cards $20 each. With 140 kids on the team they expect a lot of revenue. The team busted their A$$ from 3pm-9pm. Each kid selling an average of 20 cards. They made $55000 profit from that event. Later that night when Laurence’s mom was presented with the amount her knees gave out and cried with joy. The next week was their first game. Laurence killed it, he threw for 350 yards, and ran for another 100. But, this was only JV football so it didn’t mean much to him considering what all of his brothers did on the Varsity Basketball Court. Laurence played JV for both his Freshman and Sophomore year. At the end of his Sophomore year he averaged for over 400 yards a game and 4 touchdowns throwing and 1 rushing touchdown. The summer going into his Junior year he was killing it in the weight room. Also, he was expected to be the Starting Varsity Quarterback. He also met a soccer player that goes to his school. She liked her from the start and they started dating. Her name was Jessica. Everyone was trying to get Jessica, but luckily Laurence managed to get her. The season started to roll around again and Laurence had to play his first Varsity Game. His heart was pounding through his chest. He threw up twice before the game. The very first play of the game he threw an interception. Coach Vert pulled him aside and said “Laurence what’s up you’re not normally like this..” “I want to do good coach, I’m trying my best but nothing will happen, I’m nervous and I’m playing like s***!” Exclaimed Laurence. Coach Vert told him “Listen to me ok, you’ve been through so much s***, and you’re nervous about this? Nobody on this field has gone through that much. Take a deep breath and go show your brothers why chose this position. Have FUN!”. Coach Vert’s defense held them to a 3 and out. Laurence jogged back out there and marched the ball down the field. Laurence got popped on the next play. Once he got hit all nerves just went away. He through his first varsity touchdown from the 48 yard line. The student section was on fire! Everyone was cheering. That game Laurence threw for 1 interception, 457 yards and 3 touchdowns against Texas’s finest. The very next game Laurence broke his collarbone. He and the team was devastated. All of his d-1 football ambitions were practically slim to none. On top of that Jennifer breaks up with him, because he isn’t the Quarterback anymore. Laurence was out for the rest of the season. The team made it to playoffs with the backup Sophomore Quarterback. The backup quarterback had then at the end of the season received multiple d-2 offers for football. This dug into Laurence. On May 13th, 2015 Laurence was eventually cleared and allowed to play football. The starting position wasn’t his and it was a neck and neck battle to day 1 for the starting spot. Laurence eventually takes that starting spot. Laurence led the team to an undefeated season and 1st ranked in the state of Texas. Eventually Laurence led his to the State Championship Game. Everything was on the line. In the last Quarter with 14 seconds to go they were down by a touchdown on the opponent's 34 yard line. The play comes in through the mic set “Spread Right Flex 70 Spider 2 Y banana H-Hot”. This was the same play that he through that he through his first JV Touchdown on. He takes a 3 step drop, and then scrambles and lets it go deep. The ball hung in the air for the longest time. The whole game on the line. His best WR Lil Yachty catches it and comes down on the 1 yard line. The whole team yelling to get everyone set. *Alarm Sound* The game was over. Time ran out in regulation. They lost, but still had one hell of a season. Jessica was watching from the sideline and after the game runs up to him and says “I thought about it and decided I messed up and please get back with me”. Laurence walked by her without saying a word.  Even though Laurence and the team lost the game he was still very proud of what him and his brothers did. When Laurence got back to the school he was invited into the Athletic Directors office and given an offer from Coach Mizzone to join the UCLA Football team on a full ride scholarship. Laurence was so happy his face muscle’s were stuck at a smile the whole day. He also, ended up throwing for over 4500 yards and became the 2016 Texas All-State Quarterback. At his signing day he was greeted with cheers from everyone. He signed and was thinking to himself with everything I’ve been through, God always has a plan for you. Just stick through it and it will all be worth it. Coach Mizzone from UCLA then shakes his hand and says “Laurence Kidd, We’re excited to have you next year. You’re going to do big things for us Son!”
