The Cemetery

Legend has it that in Sacred Heart Cemetery there is a gravestone of a girl with the inscription “murdered by human wolves” written upon it. This particular grave was said to glow in the dark and be guarded by a pack of wolves. At least that is what Lee heard his entire life growing up in a small town of Oklahoma. However being who he was he wanted to see it for himself and decided to go on what he liked to call a “spook hunt”.
It was 1984, a cool autumn night when he had decided it was time to see it for himself. Lee drove down to his cousin, Brandon’s, house with his sister, April. He dropped his stuff off at Brandon’s house and left since it was already pretty late and it was a 30 minute drive to the cemetery. They drove down the long, empty road going up and down the large hills until they reached the cemetery gates.
They slowly pulled to a stop at the gates. April began to get nervous and try to talk Lee and Brandon out of going to see. However, Lee wasn’t going to let that happen. He was going to see the grave.
They all get out of the car and approach the gate slowly. The long narrow path leading to the gate was surrounded by these extremely tall trees that created a large canopy over the path making it extremely dark. A shiver went down his spine as he got closer and closer to the gate with the wind blowing harder sending chills down his spine. The tall, looming gate appeared to be a challenge to climb over. Although, Lee and Brandon hopped over with ease. April just stood at the gate, looking it up and down deciding whether or not she should hop over. Lee began to look around his surrounding area, observing and making note of how everything looked while Brandon tried to coax April over the gate. “Come on April, don’t be a wimp. Climb over,” they said. The wind had picked up more and began to howl as they waited for her to jump over. However, once she had heard the howling she had thought it was the wolves that guarded the grave. So, she had gotten scared and ran back to the car.
Brandon and Lee looked at each other and decided that they were going to still see the gravestone regardless of what April did. They walked further down the path past the gate approaching the cemetery. The wind howled louder and louder and the trees and bushes along the path began to rustle violently. Brandon became increasingly more terrified as they got closer and closer to the end of the path. Then, out of the brush they heard a loud growl. Both Brandon and Lee ran back toward the gate and hurled themselves over racing back to the car as fast as they possibly could. They jumped into the car and Lee sped away as quick as possible. However, he couldn’t shake the feeling that they were still being followed.
They sped away in the car. Almost as soon as they got 200 feet away from the gate in front of the car there was a tall figure standing in the middle of the road making direct eye contact with Lee. Then, Lee saw it spread its’ large wings. It had the wingspan of what appeared to be two people, but the funny thing was it was about the size of a person and had two long legs extending from its’ torso.  At this point Lee just reacted in the only way he knew how. He sped up and hit the large creature head on and watched it roll into a ditch. His car skidded across the road, but he continued to drive away, afraid that the creature would follow.
They drove on for about 5 or 10 minutes before Lee realized they had gotten a flat tire. They stopped along the side of the road and got out. Brandon ran to the back tire and began to look for a car jack so they could change the tire. But, he realized that they did not have one in the car.
Along the dark highway they noticed that there were two houses almost the same walking distance away from where they had stopped. One was a dark house that looked almost abandoned and the other was an older white house with the front porch light on. April and Lee decided that they would walk to that house and see if anyone was home that could help them. They made their way to the house and knocked on the door waiting patiently to see if anyone was home.
An older man opened the door. “Hello sir, we were wondering if you possibly had a car jack we could borrow. We got a flat tire a little ways down the road,” Lee said. The old man chuckled, “ Yeah of course I will go and get it. Come inside and wait.” Lee and April walked in the door and stood in the old man’s living room. April began looking around the house looking at the pictures the man on his mantle. She called Lee over, “ Hey look, it looks like he was a pilot in Vietnam,” she said. The old man came back into the room and noticed they were looking at his pictures. “Oh, I see you saw my plane,” he said, “I have many memories with that plane.” “Oh how long were you a pilot?” Lee asked. “ I was a pilot for 10 years. They wanted me to move into the frontlines, but I loved flying too much that they let me stay,” the man said.
They began to exit the house and walk back to the car. Lee and April both questioning the man as they were walking back. When they got back to the car he began to help them change their tire. The old man then talked about how one day he was sent out with his fleet in 1975 and that when they tried to land in South Vietnam many lost control because of structural failure and crashed. He described the scene to the teenagers as they watched him change their tire with ease. The teenagers were awestruck with his war stories and shook his hand and thanked him for helping them out. They packed up the busted tire and got into their car. When they drove past the man they waved and he waved back and disappeared into his house and turned off his light. The teenagers drove back home.
The next morning, Brandon’s father, who knew where they were going asked how their trip was. They recounted their story to his as he listened attentively. Brandon’s father laughed and said, “Well, I can tell you that the creature you saw was a legend. Not necessarily the one you were looking for. They call them stikinis or skinwalkers. They are believed to be Native American witch doctors who at night transform into animals typically being a large owl like the one you just described to me.” All of their mouths dropped to the table. “However,” his father continued, “ the old man in the white house.” “What about him?” Lee asked. “Well the fact is, he no longer lives there. He died in a plane crash in ‘75.” Lee was confused. “But, I shook his hand. I physically shook that man’s hand. There is no way he was dead.”
“Well, I don’t know what to tell you, that old man is dead as a doornail.”
