The Man in Black
Hudson Fields
Hudson Fields was in position to strike. He had his hands up, and his mind almost ready. Wondering when to make the first move, but Hudson was distracted. Distracted by the man that had been following him since the middle of summer. It was now the fourth week of high school, and still he saw the man everyday. He thought the man “following” him could just be a coincidence, just maybe he took the same route to his house as I did, or he was a teacher looking for a new job. But the Man in Black was someone Hudson never thought he would ever see again.
Jonah Smith
He looks distracted, thought Jonah, he never loses a match. Hudson is the most athletic teenager in Hangway High, and he is distracted. With his mind somewhere else maybe I can beat him, or atleast get the first move. Jonah brought up his hands, ready to begin to spar. He nervously threw the first punch with surprising speed and accuracy. He hit Hudson in his torso, bringing him out of his dazed state. Hudson retaliated with a roundhouse to Jonah’s knee which sent him writhing in pain to the ground.
Elijah Nelson, The Man in Black
Hudson always gets the first move in, thought Elijah, I wonder if he has noticed me. Elijah sat on the stands ducking every time Hudson looked around the room.He stood to leave for fear of Hudson seeing him, but Jonah cried in pain and fell to the floor causing the match to end. Which meant that Hudson was leaving. Elijah couldn't risk running into him. It was too early. I can't leave yet, thought Elijah, I can't risk running into him. He's not ready to know who I am. I remember when I left the day of his second birthday. It's not that I had to go, it was because I wanted to.
Hudson Fields
Once again I have won, thought Hudson, and it's only my fourth week of high school. He noticed the man in black creeping out of the room. It’s time for me to see who this man is, thought Hudson. He ran toward the door just as the man had left. When Hudson opened the door, he noticed that the man was talking on the phone, in another language. Its sounds like...French, maybe Italian, he thought. “ Il ne marche pas toujours savoir”, said the man. That’s is definitely French, because he said “He still doesn’t know,” Hudson realized. “I still don’t know what?”, Hudson asked. He spun around with a look of shock. “You look awfully familiar.”, Hudson said.
Elijah Nelson
Oh great, he has seen me, Elijah thought, I will have to tell him at some point, I will have to tell him that I am his father, his father that abandoned him at a young age so that I could live a life of peace. I would have to tell him that I didn’t want him in my life, and that I regret what I did. That living a life of peace is not what I want. I want that father son relationship that I didn’t get to have with my father. My father left me at a young age as well, I guess it's like they say “Like Father Like Son”. I want to tell him that leaving him and his mother was the worst thing I have ever done, but I have to face my fears, I have to tell him that I...love him, not just that mediocre kind of love that I experienced from my father, but the love that is everlasting. I want him to know that no matter what he does, I will still love him, but if I tell him, he will probably shut me out like I did him. Here goes, he said to himself. "We look so much alike because...because...I am your father", Elijah said hoping that this would be the first interaction with his son, and most certainly not the last.
