The sun was shining on the brand new brooklyn bridge on this bitterly cold day.  Quietly, alone I hurriedly ate my pastrami sandwich.  These lunch breaks now mean something more than they used to, before my mother died.  She died 3 months ago today, and later would be the memorial of the Brooklyn theatre fire.  Afternoon school was starting again so I only had ´till half past to eat my lunch.
Then I walked briskly back to school.  The day felt like it was going by as slow as molasses.  And as the final bell rang, I put on my overcoat.  What was that in the pocket.  A shiny nickel took my imagination around the world.  Pizza, chocolate, a hot cross bun. A dark remote with a big red button interrupted my thought.  Hesitantly I walked over to it, and pushed the button not knowing it would change my life forever.  White light flashed and my head spun around in circles.  I got up off the curb and looked around.  The world was mesmerizing.  Flashing lights! Motorized cars! And these peculiar small rectangles that people held up to their ears.  Where was I?
“Nice pants dork”
The man went over to his friends and laughed at my knickers.  A street sign on the corner read Flatbush & Atlantic.  I was in Brooklyn!  A newsstand had a couple copies of the New York Times.  The date said Wednesday, December 7 2016!  There had to be some relatives I could talk to in this strange future.  “Excuse me” is said to a man on the street.  No answer.  “Excuse me” I repeated.
“Whadda ya want?” The voice boomed.
“D..d.d you know anyone with the last name Levy”.  I stammered as a result of the 6 foot man towering in front of me.
“Nah. Scram little kid”
Next to the Newsstand, I found a green map. Why were there animals on it?  Hmmm… where is the Monkey house?
“Excuse me, Your looking a map of the Bronx Zoo”
Zoo? In New York? “Oh, thank you miss”.  Slowly she walked away.  Suddenly, she spun around, and as her eyes lit up, she grabbed the forgotten remote out of my left pocket.
“How’d you get this” the blond girl yelled ,
And before I could answer
She yelled, “Come with us!”
They dragged me through streets and alleys.  We weaved our way through push carts and pedestrians.  Finally, we slowed down at a park.  The magnificent, finished Brooklyn Bridge towered over us.  Out of blue the blond peppered me with questions.
“Where are you from? Why do you have the remote?Who are You?”
“Slow down, Slow down. I'm from Brooklyn 1877, My name is Aidan, I don't know what the remote is, or how I got here.” I fired off my thought before she started taking again.  But the brunette interrupted us.
“Guys, I figured it out!, it’s under the bridge!” She ecstatically stated.
She pulled out the map and mentioned to the East River.
“The bomb is here. Summer, your unicorn friend-”
“Chartreuse”, the other girl cut her off.
“Yes, Chartreuse. She will swim under the bridge and dislodge the bomb from where ISIS hid it. Then she will swim it back to us and we will bring it to a research center. There they will dismantle it so everyone will happily ever after.”
She finished her thought and plan.  “By the way, what are your names?” I asked as we ran to the river edge.  The brown haired girl said her name was Jaden and the Blondes name was Summer.  Spontaneously, ripples appeared in the water.  What kind of fish is that big?  A horn showed, followed by a horse as a mysterious unicorn emerged from the water. A UNICORN in BROOKLYN? How did this happen.
“Sorry I was eavesdropping, but I'm in”
“What it can talk???” No one answered me.  Is this a regular thing in 2016?  We all huddled up to the Unicorn as Jaden told her the plan.
“You will swim 45 feet underwater. The bomb is 1000 feet in from the water’s edge. At those points the bomb should be right there.”
Summer walked over and had a moment with the unicorn.  The the unicorned turned around and dove back into the water.

“I have to go take care of some business.”
“Why? We still need to stop the bomb”, Summer yelled.
“ I just need to go do something”, “Where’s the remote?!”.  I snatched it off the table and with a flash of light they were gone.  I'm pretty sure I was back in 1877, but I had to make sure.  I ran up to a stranger on the street.  “Who is the current president sir?”
“Rutherford B. Hayes young laddy”
The man looked at me like I was crazy,
but I was glad to be home.  In the same spot as always, the remote was there in my pocket.  Breath, Breath.  I took the remote out and with the familiar flash of light, it was 4 months earlier.  The distinctive foliage and crisp smell of September awoke my senses.
