My younger brother, Azmi, and I had never been close. Having been the only child for seven years, I resented the fact that another child had come into the family. My resentment grew as the years passed, and I made little effort to get along with my little brother. Improving our relationship was the last thing on my mind. I was foolish enough to think that he took away my privilege of being the apple of my parent' eye. Looking back, I regret my behaviour, but there is little I can do to make it up to him, because tragedy took him away from our lives one fateful day.

           I was hanging out with my friend in the park when I spotted Azmi under a nearby tree. He was just standing there watching us having fun. I began to feel irritated so I called him over. His face lit up when he saw me calling him, and he immediately ran towards us.

           He was very excited and asked if he could join in the fun. Something inside me just snapped. How dare he ask to join us! I told him off in front of my friend and asked him to get lost. He stood there, dejected, with tears in his eyes. Then, he suddenly turned and ran off. I was relieved to see him go. I saw him reach the end of the field. I expected him to slow down when he reached the road, but he just ran across it without stopping to check the traffic.

           Everything else happened so quickly. I heard the screech of brakes and I saw him being hit by a car. The important sent him flying across the road. My friend and I will never forget the sight of his motionless body, lying in a pool of blood on the road.

           The doctors could not save him and he died in hospital. It has been three months since his death and I still grieve for him. I regret that I will not be able to ask for his forgiveness and I don' t think  I can ever forgive myself for what happened.
