Freedom
Freedom shares the story of the man who is finally being released from prison to meet his wife. He feels conflicted about where he will go and what he will do next. What will he do?
Chapter 1: Freedom “How long did you think I would wait?” the man in white asked through the iron bars.
The man in the jumpsuit was silent, still numb to the sound of the buzzer and iron doors clanking open.
“What’s the rush?” murmured the man in the jumpsuit .
“Everyone’s already outside. What’s the matter? You’re usually never late.”
“Nothing much, just thinking about when they release me.”
“When are you gone?”
“In a few hours.”
The man in white paused,“At least you’ll be able to finish off the day.”
“I guess.”
The sun dimmed at 7:30, as if it had a schedule. A chilly breeze rustled the wilting flowers and dying grass. Artificial lights electrified the courtyard behind bars, bringing to light those who would try to escape. The two men hurried out into the courtyard.
“I knew it was coming but I can’t believe it’s already here.” the man in the jumpsuit sighed.
“Yeah, a lot of people don’t know whether to be sad that their leaving or happy to get out.”
“Whatever.”
The man in the jumpsuit and the man in white walked past an open tool shed alongside the main hall. Rusted pickaxes and knocked buckets could be seen past the door.
“Do you know what you’re going to do after?”
“Go to my wife. I haven’t seen her in a long time.”
“When was the last time you saw her?”
The man in the jumpsuit wavered; he couldn’t bring himself to answer the question.
“Where is she now?”
“She moved to North Hill, into some cozy place with a bunch of others. She just couldn’t take being alone anymore.”
“Are you scared?” asked the man in white.
“Of?”
“Leaving.”
“Oh.”
The man in the jumpsuit walked slower; he thought about his response.
“Well, I’m sure everyone who’s leaves probably feels scared. They’ve spent a lot of time here and all of a sudden, they have to go.”
“Are you ready to leave?”
“I don’t know, but either way, I don’t think it really matters. It’s not my choice to stay.”
“Well, you have a wife waiting for you. And you have all the freedom in the world. What’s there to be anxious about?”
“Yeah I know, but I think part of me isn’t sure if I want to leave yet.”
“But you’ve been here for so long, and you’ve hated it”
“That’s not important.”
The man in the jumpsuit slowed to a limping pace and heaved a sighed. Both men continued to walk quietly. The two reached another building and approached a hallway leading to a room. The man in the jumpsuit finally stopped.
“Well, it’s time.” noted the man in white.
“Guess it is.”
“Best of luck to you,” said the man in white.“And tell your wife I said hello.”
The man in the jumpsuit looked through the window of the door to the small room. He tried to grin and blink back tears.
He picked up the pace; he didn’t want to keep her waiting.
