Social Stubborn
“DUDE, keep quiet. No videos. Its funny, but-” I texted. “Mr. Snyder is going to find out, these phones are ruining our life!” Inara said. “Girls, one word for you...detention!” exclaimed Mr. Snyder. Inara and I have always been on our phones since we got them, we used are nerds big time.
Someone needed to teach them that academics is more important than their social life. “Sky, let’s go to 7-eleven before school and get something to eat during class!” Inara suggested.
“That’s a great idea! Then we can snack in class,” I claimed. Inara and I always like to make deals with each other.
We decided to go Skylar vs. Inara in who can go without their phone.
“Skylar, drop your phone in the jar.”
“Why?”
“WHY?! Because these phones are ruining our lives, so drop it in.”
“No. You drop yours in first.”
“Why should I?”
I decided to leave it there for a week without cheating, whoever cheats will get to decide the punishment for the other. I thought it wasn’t fair to go without our phones for a while, but Inara thought it was the right thing to do. I didn’t think so, so then I went to replace it with a fake phone and thought this would work.
I was the only one surviving without getting cranky because I cheated and thought she wouldn’t notice. The next morning we went to 7-eleven and she was suspicious because she thought I would get cranky when I don’t have a phone.
“Inara, what do you want to buy?” I asked trying to act cranky.
“Hot cheetos?” she asked and threw me a pack.
“Okay,” I replied, but knew hot cheetos weren’t a hot topic anymore. “Here you go. $1.49.”
The girl at the counter checked the item out, and handed me the bag.
“Thanks. Inara, pick something quick! It’s almost time for school.”I needed some
excuse to take Inara’s mind away from the phone challenge topic.
“Yeah. One second. I’m choosing.”
“No Pressure. Just that the bell rings in 2 minutes. If you don’t come, I’m leaving”.
One week later, the phone challenge is over and Inara forgets to remind me, so I think there is nothing to worry about. After the phone challenge I felt bad for letting my best friend down, so I put the real phone in the jar for a day.
"Hey how come your phone looks different than it did yesterday? "Inara questioned.
"I don't know what your talking about" I nervously replied. From that moment Inara couldn't take her suspicions off the phone challenge which honestly wasn't a big deal. I was having a battle with my best friend over a phone. It's like we don't care about each other, we only care about our phones.
I was still clueless about the challenge and was just wondering, if Inara kept getting more suspicious, what would she do with our phones. I wish she would forget about it. "Hey Sky should we give our phones away?" She said sarcastically.
"I don't know, it sounds like too much work" I said nervously. Inara didn't seem sure enough, but if she found out I cheated during the challenge, she will give both our phones away.
I decided to do something nice for once like give up my phone for myself because I felt really bad for Inara for once. I did it, it was the worst week of my life, although I realized my grades were much better than it was before. Suddenly the phone towers went out because of a major storm. I walked to Inara’s house and we both will have to survive one month without phones because of nature. Extreme weather affects the way Inara and I use our phones for a month. I can’t manage to get back my phone under any conditions everything comes in the way of the me using that phone. “WOW!, our grades are straight A’s” surprisingly Inara said.
“I thought this was a joke but no!” I was jumping up and down. On the bad side I have to give up my phone which is bad for me, myself, of course for society too because everyone has a damaged cell phone towers. It affects the way everyone in society will use their phones.
My parents are religious and expect me to believe in god and all that nonsense, though apparently it is working because of my straight A’s. God has punished me for my bad deeds, like using my phone in the past, so I decided this month is the perfect month to do it. I want to make up for my bad deeds in the past, I’m pretty sure Inara is also doing that because she has been awfully sweet for a while because she also believes in god. God is everywhere to watch me do bad and good. To make sure I deserve the phone I will start doing good so I don’t get punished and get the life I had back. I started studying hard in all my classes and doing activities with Inara after school. “We discovered talents we never had!” exclaimed Inara.
“Yeah we can, swim, skate, and play soccer!” I happily said.
Yes, I was impressed with myself though I was missing my social life, instagram twitter, a little bit. My hard work soon paid off when I got what I wanted, a laptop for my studying. Even though I don’t have a phone for a few more weeks, I can still stay in contact with my friends. Everyday it seemed to get easier without a phone when something I least expect happened.
Cell phone towers were back up and I was ready to get my phone back, and still accomplish my life. “Hey great news!!” Inara ran up to me, “I got rid of the phones!!”
I panicked at first, I was angry with rage, “WHAT WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME I DID THE CHALLENGE AND IT IS OVER I NEED THAT PHONE BACK, RIGHT NOW, THIS IS NOT FAIR AT ALL!!!!!!! I NEED THIS PHONE I WILL STILL ACCOMPLISH MY LIFE!!!!!” I screamed with rage.
“RELAX MAN!” she said, as she handed me a flip phone instead of a smart phone. Then all the pieces started to come together, and it all made sense now. I was ashamed of myself for getting angry, but I learned a lesson. FRIENDS OVER PHONES, SCHOOL OVER SOCIAL LIFE.
THE END

This piece reminds me of how everyone is so obsessed with their phones these days, and the lesson they can learn from not using it
