The Fear Hidden Inside
It was a warm, spring afternoon at Charlotte “Phantomhive” Jaeger’s middle school. At her school, they call Charlotte “Phantomhive” because she loves an anime character named Ciel Phantomhive. The wind brushed through the dirty hallways blowing away the trash and leaves that were found. It finally reached Charlotte and her friend, Mia Chase. It blew threw her luscious dark brown hair. The wind always gave her a feeling of freedom. Charlotte stretched her arms wide open in the air as the wind came on by. Then she gently rested her arms down. She walked down the hallway with Mia, talking about how great an anime they both watched was while she was holding her unopened Lays potato chips.
“OMG! Kuroshitsuji is just amaziful!” Charlotte exclaimed.
“Oh my gosh, yeah! Sebastian Michaelis for the win!” Mia yelled continuously cheering for Sebastian Michaelis, one of the main characters in that anime.
“No! Ciel Phantomhive for the win! I will always be loyal to Ciel. Period. No more arguing!” Charlotte said trying to end the conversation of this anime.
“No! Micha-” Mia tried to say before Charlotte cut her off.
“The Phantomhive manor for the win, okay?” Charlotte said calmly.
“Fine,” Mia said agreeing with a puff.
Suddenly, she heard footsteps and teasing voices behind her. The footsteps were extremely loud and thumpy.
The people who were yelling, Charlotte thought to herself, They sound familiar. Who could it be? She turned around and saw it was her two guy friends.
“Give me my food back!” screamed Robert.
“No! It’s mine! I ate it!” Brandon screamed in front. They ran around the hallway past Charlotte and Mia until they ran out of breath. Brandon disappeared at the corner and didn’t come back. Robert sat down clutching his stomach. Charlotte walked up to him and asked, ”Are you okay?”
Robert said in a sad voice, ”I’m hungry… MUST HAVE FOOD! But I don’t have darn money in my account.“ Robert took a deep breath and sighed it out. Charlotte gave sympathy for him so gave him her bag of chips.
“Thanks!” Robert said excitedly. Then he started to wolf down the whole bag of chips in less than two minutes.
“No prob,” Charlotte said in a kind, joyful voice and she slowly walked away with Mia.
Brandon came running down the hallway from where he was hiding and yelled, “Why did you just do that?! I purposely took his food ‘because I wanted him to starve!”
“Why would you want him to starve? He’s your best friend!” Charlotte said defending.
“Well, I was going to give it back to him,” Brandon responded impatiently and took another bite out of the sandwich, “At least give him half,” and then he hustled away.
“Well don’t do it next time!” Charlotte scowled behind him. Then she focused her eyes on Robert. Robert was already done with his food and look full and satisfied. Charlotte smiled at that view and looked back at Mia. Her eyes were full of angriness toward Charlotte it made Charlotte feel kind of scared so she started to back away from her friend.
“What? Why are you looking at me like that?” Charlotte asked as she c***ed her head sideways.
“You know what you did! Why did you give him you food?’ Mia yelled.
“Well, he-” Charlotte began.
“You’re too nice Charlotte! God!” Mia scolded.
“I’m sorry, but I just can’t help being nice! This is who I am! And like the way I am!” Charlotte yelled back. She started to to feel tears form in her eyes and a warm drop of tear drop down to her cheek. Mia looked uncomfortable now.
“Charlotte…I didn’t mean to yell at you like that,” Mia said softly now regretting what she just did.
“No, I’m sorry Mia. You’re right… maybe I’m being too big of a goody two shoes,” Charlotte said as she wiped that tear off her cheek. She took in a big sigh and let it all out. She thought of what would happen in her future if she wasn’t nice. But what if she was?
I hope my future of being nice won’t get wasted by something stupid, Charlotte thought to herself.
After thinking about this for a few minutes, she started walking again, but Mia was still in shock of what she did.
“Come one! Let’s get a move-on already! The bell is about to ring!” retorted Charlotte as she stopped walking and waited for Mia to catch up with her.
“Hehe… right!” Mia uttered and quickly ran to where Charlotte was quietly.
A two years later when Charlotte went to eighth grade, one of her classmates, Claire Ackerman, asked her with a smile on her face, ”So Phantomhive, when are you born?”
“November 27th. I’m still twelve. Why do you ask?” Charlotte questioned with a curious voice.
“I was just wondering…” retorted Claire with a sideways smile and glanced at her friend who was sitting across from her. They exchanged glances and looked back at her.
“Hey, can you do me a favor?” Claire asked kindly.
“Sure! What do you want me to do for you today, young master?” Charlotte said jokingly trying to sound like Sebastian Michaelis.
“Can you like… help me with my homework?” Claire said.
“Um… sure! For whose class thou-” Before Charlotte could finish, Claire piled up all her homework and stacked it on top of Charlotte’s worksheet.
“Thanks a lot, Phantomhive! You’re too kind!” Claire said as she stood up and was getting ready to pack up. Charlotte looked down at all the extra homework she had just received. Oh boy, this is going to be tough! thought Charlotte. When she got home, she put extra hard work into her and Claire’s homework more than she expected herself to. The next day, she handed Claire her homework. In return, she got another big stack of homework to do. She tried to fight back her tears that were starting to wound up in her eyes, but they just fell out. Every time one single drop came down, she cried harder. Mia, who say everything, walked up to the sobbing piece of flesh and patted her on the back.
“Charlotte, I told you that you were too nice! How about this I’ll help you with the homework, okay?” Mia said trying comfort Charlotte. In response, Charlotte nodded her and continued crying. Mia sighed deeply. She brought over her backpack and took half of the stack of extra homework and stuffed it all in her binder.
“Oh and Charlotte,” Mia started.
“Huh?” Charlotte said as she wiped her dripping nose.
“You don’t own me for this one, okay? This is me paying you back for yelling at you two years ago,” Mia said as she packed up all her things and waited for Charlotte to pack hers up.
“Okay then,” whispered Charlotte. Then she attempted to smile so she won’t get Mia all worried up. This made Mia give her a weak smile back. She’s still worried. Oh well. There’s nothing I could do to change her feelings right now, said Charlotte to herself in her mind. This reminded her of what Charlotte thought two years ago.
“I hope my future of being nice won’t get wasted by something stupid” I thought. Well, now my hopes are dead for this one. My kindness was wasted on such a stupid thing like this! Argh! I regret this so much!, Charlotte reflected.
Still crying, Charlotte walked out of the room with Mia.
“Hey, Phantomhive! Woah, you okay?” asked Robert running up behind them. “Yeah,” Charlotte assured, “I’m fine. Don’t need to worry.”
“Okay then,” Robert answered with a worried look on her face.
“I’ll tell you what happened after second period, okay?” Mia uttered to Robert.
Robert nodded and headed to his next class. At least my kindness to this guy isn’t wasted, Charlotte thought with a satisfied grin on her face.
“See ya at brunch!” yelled Mia starting to depart with Charlotte.
“Okay! Bye!” Charlotte responded.
By the time Charlotte got home, it was 5 because of her debate club. She unpacked her backpack got back to her work. Then she started crying again. Just thinking of doing this pisses her off.
Why do I deserve this? I don’t! she thought, I don’t want to be a servant anymore! I don’t want to go to school! I don’t want to get bullied! I don’t even want to live anymore! Darn you, Claire!
Charlotte cried harder and harder until she didn’t have oxygen in her lungs. She tried to calms herself and gasped for air while doing that. The next day, Mia noticed that Charlotte didn’t come to school. What could have happened? Mia wondered.
“Hey, Chase!” Claire yelled from across the room.
“What do you want, Ackerman?” Mia responded.
“Where’s that weak friend of yours?” Claire demanded.
“First off, she’s not weak, she is better than you, you big lump of flesh. Second, I don’t know, and here’s your homework,” Mia said as she took out Claire’s homework and handed it to her.
“Why is it blank?!” Claire yelled as she looked through her papers.
“You deserve getting a F on all your assignments for abusing my best friend like a slave,” Mia said roughly.
Claire growled and started to swear at Mia. Mia simply walked away ignoring Claire’s rude comments and sat down in her seat. After school, Mia walked over to Charlotte’s house. When she got the the doorstep, she could hear someone crying. She pressed the doorbell but no one responded. She pressed it again but harder. The crying stopped and the door flew open. There stood Charlotte, all red-eyed from crying and her face dripping wet.
“OH MY GOD! Charlotte what happened to you?!” Mia said really worried now.
“I-I don’t deserve to be treated like this, Mia. W-why has god chosen me out of all people? W-why couldn’t he choose Claire? Have I-I done anything wrong? HAVE I?!” Charlotte said between sobs.
Mia stepped in the Jaeger’s house and saw there was used tissue paper all over the place.
Yikes! Mia thought, This place is a mess!
“Mia, I don’t want to go to school anymore…”Charlotte said
. Mia was shocked by what Charlotte said.
“WHAT!? But you can’t! That’s against the laws!” Mia screamed.
“Then I want to leave this city! Charlotte yelled sobbing, “I don’t want to live anymore! I feel out of place!”
“No you don’t! How about this, I’ll teach you how to a bit more sassy like me and in return, you have to go to school for another week, okay?’ Mia said roughly.
“FINE! But if it doesn’t work, then I’m leaving!” Charlotte pouted.
“Fine!” Mia extended her hand to make the deal.
Charlotte took her hand and shook it hard.
“See you tomorrow at school then?” Mia said as she stepped out the door.
“Yeah, sure!” Charlotte replied.
When Charlotte went back to school, Claire demanded for her homework back. Charlotte got out her papers and Claire gave her another big stack of homework. Luckily, Mia was there, Mia pushed the stack away and helped Charlotte pack her things. Mia grabbed Charlotte by the wrists and lead her out of the classroom after the bell rang. When she was walking out door, she saw Claire all fired up. She gave her a “you dare do that again, I will punch your face of” glance to Claire as she walked out the door. Claire ran up to Mia while Mia pushed Charlotte out of the way between the idiot and her.
“HEY! WHY DIDN’T YOU-” Claire yelled behind the two.
Before Claire could say anything else, Mia slammed the door in her face.
“Ouch! That was harsh!” Charlotte said since she saw everything.
“ Whatever! Anyways, lesson 1: saying no to things you don’t want,” Mia said, “If you saw what I did, next time you meet a situation like this, simply say no or push it aside and get back to what you were doing.”
Charlotte nodded and smiled. After a week, Claire stopped giving Charlotte her homework and everyone who bullied her started to back off wondering how she suddenly got so tough.
“Hey, Charlotte,” Mia said to Charlotte. Mia personally felt worried of what Charlotte might respond with to her question.
“Yeah?” asked Charlotte.
“Have you decided to stay yet?” Mia said worried.
There was a long pause. A shifting of bodies, and the big wind blowing by. After a few seconds, Charlotte broke the awkward silence between them.
“I think yeah!” Charlotte retorted with a sideways smile.
“So what did you decide?” Mia responded with a shaky voice. If I was in anime, then I would probably have a sweat drop on the side of my face, Mia thought silently to herself.
“I think I’m going to stay after all!” Charlotte smiled wider than usual and Mia was relieved.
“Phew! Thank god! I’m just glad you’re staying,” Mia retorted.
“Yeah. I learnt what I had to from the best!” Charlotte shrugged.
“Aw! Thanks!” Mia said as she hugged Charlotte.
Charlotte now felt much better. Her heart didn’t feel as heavy anymore. The wind whistled through the trees.
This is home, she thought, This is where I belong.
The end™
