GO HOME
It was a late afternoon when Denyairias finally awoke to the cold breeze drifting through her room; Denyairias ambled through the hall to find only her brother laying flat on the couch watching TV.
“Ryan!” yelled Giselle, “didn’t I tell you not to touch my stuff?!”
“What are you talking about,” replied Ryan, “I haven’t even been in your room since mom went to go pick dad up.”
“Wait what ? Mom went to go pick dad up already,” said Denyairias, “she was supposed to take me to Aaliyah’s!”
Denyairias pulled the cord from the wall and ran towards the door; the charger hooked onto her mom’s jewelry box and it slammed to the floor; that's when they heard the doorbell ring. Denyairias then ran to her room and plugged in her phone.
“Kids, come help with the groceries; we have a lot,” shouted Aracel.
“Mom, what happened? I thought you were going to ta…” Denyairias started.
“I know, you wouldn’t wake up,” interrupted Aracel. “ Your dad was already calling; I can still take you, but after groceries, okay?”
“Okay, I just need to go pick something up,” replied Denyairias.
As she approached her mom's room she saw a couple of rings and many folded papers; as a result, she then picked up the papers that read Adoption Papers; from there hung a picture of Denyairias when she was younger. Denyairias fixed everything, went to her room and took a picture of the papers; she yelled,”Mom, what is this?”
as she drew closer to the door she broke into tears. Aracel, Steven, Giselle, and Ryan all came in the house.
“Kids...please go to your rooms,” said Steven, “we need some private time k.”
“Why? When were you guys planning to tell me! Never?” shouted Denyairias.
“We were going to tell you, we just didn’t know how to or how you would react,” answered Aracel.
“When, mom when? I am almost fifteen,” cried Denyairias.
It was silent.
“Just please take me to Aaliyah’s, so I have some time to process everything...she can take me to school.” said Denyairias.
Everyone was silent the whole ride, until the end, when all that was said was their goodbye’s .
“Hey D, why so late?” asked Aaliyah, “I kept calling.”
Denyairias looked up.
“Hey Aaliyah, I was sleeping. Sorry; Oh and does your mom already know I’m staying the night?”
“Yep, I told her the night we planned it; oh and Ms. Galvan, do you wanna come in; my mom cooked spaghetti”
“ No, it’s best if I leave,” said Aracel. “ Tell your mom to call me.”
Denyairias greeted Alyssa-Aaliyah’s mom-with a hug while Aaliyah told her what Aracel had said. Aaliyah knew something was up with Denyairias the moment she looked up, so of course Aaliyah asked and Denyairias told her starting with the drop of the jewelry box.
The next morning they woke up to to the sound of dishes clattering.
“Are you girls hungry?” asked Alyssa.
“You hungry Denyairias?” whispered Aaliyah.
“Nah I don’t really eat in the mornings.” said Denyairias.
“We’re good mom,” screamed Aaliyah. “Have you seen my backpack?”
“Yeah I saw it this morning I think it was by the door” replied Alyssa.
As they walked to the door they grabbed her bag and left to school. Once they got to school they separated to their first period class. Fifth period, her favorite, came which is when she sees her two closest friends, Dylan and Tyler, plus her best friend, Aaliyah.
“Hi Denyairias!” said Tyler. “Your sister has been asking for you and she told me to keep an eye on you..?”
“Uhmmm well that’s weird.” chuckled Denyairias.
“Hey guys where’s Aaliyah?” said Dylan, “she wasn’t in class today.”
“That’s weird she brought me to school today.” said Denyairias.
The second bell rang and they clumped in their seats. As minutes passed Aaliyah walked in, talked to the teacher and sat down without saying a word.
“Aaliyah?” whispered Denyairias. “What happened Dylan told me you weren’t in class.”
“My mom picked me up after first period.” said Aaliyah.
“Oh is she okay?” said Denyairias.
“Yeah, yeah she’s fine,” said Aaliyah, “she asked if maybe you wanted to come over today ?”
“Mhm i’ll come over,” said Denyairias. “Oh ughh I need to ask; I don’t think she’ll let me because she wants to talk.”
“No my mom already called your mom and asked her if you could.” said Aaliyah.
After fifth period came sixth and everybody she was close to acted so strange towards her; she felt as if they were all watching her every moves.
“Dylan!” yelled Denyairias, “Why aren’t you talking to me?”
“I’m tired Denyairias, it’s sixth period.” said Dylan.
“I know that but not even Tyler is talking to me; all you guys do is stare at me.” said Denyairias.
“Well i’m sorry; are you going to Aaliyah’s today?” said Dylan.
“Yeahh..? How do you know?” asked Denyairias.
“Because you don’t want to go with your mom.” said Dylan.
“And how do you know that?” whispered Denyairias.
“Just nevermind.” said Dylan with a sigh.
At that point Denyairias was anxious and just wanted to leave. Aaliyah and Denyairias arrived at Aaliyah’s house an hour after Denyairias had expected. Aaliyah unlocked the door but slowly; Once Denyairias walked inside she saw her mom, dad, sister, brother, Alyssa, Dylan, and Tyler. Denyairias sighed and tried to walk out.
“No no no no” whispered Denyairias.
“I know you’re mad at us Denyairias,” said Steven, “ but we are here to explain the truth to you.”
Aaliyah sat down on the couch along with the rest of them; Denyairias was left standing alone.
“I’m sorry Denyairias; I should've told you sooner.” said Aaliyah.
“Sorry? You are sorry! I told you everything that I was struggling with and you just sat there not even telling me anything?!” shouted Denyairias. “You’re my best friend I can’t believe this..”
“Denyairias before you start blaming everybody for their wrongs listen to what we have to say.” said Aracel
“I would listen but is it going to be more lies?” shouted Denyairias.
“Denyairias sit down now!” yelled Steven.
Denyairias sat down next to Dylan and tyler without looking at or saying a word to them.
“Your mother was raped when she was nineteen; She had already started college and she knew where she was headed.” said Aracel, “your mother was left with you and your twin brother, she had no family where she lived. You and your brother went through the adoption center and we took you in.”
“I get why you guys don’t want me to see her but I don’t know what’s true and what’s not; I don’t know who to believe, I need to see for myself.”
“We’ll talk some more during dinner,” said Alyssa. “ I made my special!”
Everyone scrambled to the kitchen ready to help with the table. Denyairias saw her mom’s purse with her keys hanging from it. Denyairias jumped in her mom’s car and drove off not knowing where to go. Alyssa noticed Denyairias’s absence at least ten minutes after she left; Everyone searched and searched until finally somebody noticed the missing car. After all the clues were finally put together they informed the cops about a missing car hoping they would find her along with it. Denyairias struggling to drive and take out her phone almost drove into the back of a van yet managed to move into the right lane in time. Denyairias yanked out her phone and immediately searched for the image she had took of the adoption papers; searching for the address as fast as she could she finally found the photo. Denyairias was headed an hour away from home. About thirty minutes after the police was informed about the stolen/missing car they found the car, however nobody was found inside the car. The police searched for at least ten minutes for someone nearby, that’s when they found Denyairias staring at her phone, staring at her phone to try to figure out where to turn next. The police snuck up on her and grabbed her arms while the other handcuffed her and told her, her rights. Once they arrived at the police station she was told her mom was on her way and asked questions about the car; she explained and left home.
“Denyairias listen to me, I understand the amount of pain you may be feeling right now, but what you have been searching for this whole time is what you’ve been running from, we are your parents Denyairias us; we took you in, we took care of you, we love you.” said Aracel.
“Yeah I know you took me in, I know you took care of me, and I know you
love me and I love you too, but what I don’t know is what my birth mom looks like, if she actually loves me… I need to see her!” Denyairias began to sob.
The next day Denyairias didn’t go to school she was on house arrest with her sister because they were afraid she would try to escape again.
“Denyairias open up, it’s me tyler.” whispered tyler in her room window.
“Why are you here go back to school.” grunted Denyairias.
“Fine I guess i’ll take the food I brought for you with me too.” giggled tyler.
“Wait no leave the food” shouted Denyairias. “It’s bad enough i’m stuck here with nothing to make.”
“Alright well open your window so I can go.” replied Tyler.
“Take me with you; I need to get out of here.” said Denyairias.
“aaa—alright but only for thirty minutes which is how much time I have left until this period ends.” Tyler hesitated.
“Ughh kay, i’ll be out right now” said Denyairias.
Denyairias leaded Tyler to a place he didn’t recognize but went along anyways.
“Where are we going I don’t know this place.” asked Tyler.
“Just keep going, I know what I’m doing” whispered Denyairias.
“Listen, we need to go back before we get lost and your time is almost up.” said Tyler surprisingly calm.
“Omg okay leave me i’ll go from here.” shouted Denyairias.
“No! I can’t just leave you are you insane we just got you back.” yelled Tyler.
“okay, then keep driving.” said Denyairias.
“I’m taking you home D; I can’t be driving around with you all day.” replied Tyler.
Tyler turned around and drove Denyairias back home.
“I can’t believe after all that time I didn’t even get to go where I wanted to.” sighed Denyairias.
“Where exactly were you trying to go?” asked Tyler.
“To see my mom okay? Just leave now I want to be alone.” demanded Denyairias.
Denyairias went to school today, but ditched second period to go walking to her mom’s house which she so desperately believed she would see.
Denyairas walked forty five and realized this was about the closest she’s ever gotten; according to her phone she only had 30 more minutes to get to where she wanted. Denyairias, not even three blocks away noticed she was being followed, knowing that she ran a little faster and tried calling Tyler, who didn’t pick up..Nobody did they were all in school. Denyairias was at least one block away now and she sees a group of guys closing in on her, from the front and the back.

“Honey, can you answer my phone?” said Aracel.
“Yep, once I find it of course.” replied Steven.
“Hello?” asked Steven.
“Mr. Gilbert ?” asked an anonymous person.
“Yes?” said Steven.
“I’m sheriff Forbes and there really is no easy way for me to say this but your daughter Denyairias was found unconscious with stab wounds and a gunshot.” said sheriff Forbes.
“What? Where is she right now ?” asked Steven.
“She’s in St. claire’s at the moment on a machine helping her breathe.” said sheriff.
“I’m on my way.” yelled Steven.
Steven hung up the phone ran to his shoes and slipped them on while telling Aracel what he was told.
“Denyairias?! Are you awake?” asked Steven.
“Mmm..Dad where am I?” asked Denyairias
“You’re at the hospital” cried Aracel, “You got sht on your leg and stabbed several times in your stomach; do you remember?”
“I—I remember walking and seeing this group of guys they were all walking towards me and then...nothing.” whispered Denyairias.
“Why did you leave school? Where were you trying to go?” asked Aracel.
“To be honest I was walking to my mom’s house because every chance I got was ruined, I was so close.” sighed Denyairias.
“How do you know her address?” said Steven.
“I saw it on the adoption papers..” replied Denyairias.
“If you wanna see her so bad and not listen to us i’ll take you but she doesn’t want to see you Denyairias.” yelled Steven.
As soon as Denyairias was stable enough to leave the hospital the first thing she wanted to do was go see her mom.
“Dad are we going to see my mom?” asked Denyairias.
“Yeah give me the address.” said Steven.
They drove for at least an hour until they arrived at her house.
“Well go!” said Steven.
“Do I just knock?” said Denyairias.
“Yeah unless you wanna break in.” replied Steven.
Denyairias walked to her door and hesitated to knock but finally did.
“I’m coming!” yelled a woman from the inside.
the door opened.
“Oh no i’m not looking into buying cookies right now but thanks.” said Katherine.
“I am giving these to you for free.” answered Denyairias.
“Oh okay thanks.” replied Katherine in a questionable tone.
“Mhm uhm you don’t know who I am do you?” asked Denyairias.
“I’m sorry ? Am I supposed to know you?” asked Katherine.
“Katherine right?” asked Denyairias.
Denyairias remembered the name written on the adoption papers.
“Yeah? How do you know me?” asked Katherine.
“I am your daughter.” whispered Denyairias.
Katherine slammed the door before Denyairias was able to say more.
“Please talk to me.” said Denyiairias.
everything was slilent.
“Why didn’t you want me! Why did you get rid of me?” yelled Denyairias.
“Denyiairias! come on let's go” shouted Steven.
Denyairias bawled at her mother's doorsteps not forgiving herself for ruining the one chance she was able to speak to her mom.
