The Ornament
Chris’ dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer six months ago. Unfortunately, today was the day that Mr. Kyle Riverston passed away. At 10:11 a.m. his heart gave its one, last, exhausted beat. Chris was at his father’s bedside when these events occurred.
“Nurse! Nurse!”
“Yes. Is anything… Oh no. I will page the doctors. We will do what we can.” After twenty minutes of helplessly trying to revive Mr. Riverston, he finally passed away.
Chris, from that very moment, was overcome with a great amount of grief. Why would God do something like this? This thought was swirling around in his head all day.
Kyle was Chris’ only relative left. His mother, who was an only child, died six years ago in a terrible car accident. And his father was an only child as well. Chris had no one left.
A few days later, Chris got a call.
“Hello. Is this Christopher Riverston?” Chris had never talked to the stranger on the other end of the line. His voice was very foreign.
“Yes, why?”
“I am an official government worker. We never received a will from you father. It just so happens that prior to your father’s death, he was filing for bankruptcy.”
Chris zoned out after this part. To add to having no family he also had no money. Chris was financially supported by his father; he payed for his bills, his apartment, his food, and his nursing school fees. He insisted on paying for everything.
“Wait, wait, wait. If he was filing for bankruptcy then why did he pay for all of my expenses?”
“That is a mystery to all of us, sir. The only thing that I can think of is that he has money stashed away somewhere. The only thing is that all of his possessions are owned by the government. If the money is in his house than it’s ours.”
“Okay thank you for your call. Have a nice day.”
“No problem. May God bless you in your troubles.”
Chris hung up and set the phone down. All he wanted to do was scream. He was alone, sad, and poor.
Six months after the tragedy, Chris had found a side job. He was working at a little bakery down the street from his apartment. He was always exhausted between work and school.
On Saturday, the third of December, Chris finally found time to set up Christmas decorations. Every year, Chris and his father would decorate Chris’ apartment. Kyle had one ornament that was his favorite. It was a snowman’s face, in the shape of a glass, cream colored, sphere. At the top of it there was a red and white striped hat. When Chris saw the ornament he left it at the bottom of the box, waiting to put it on the tree last. When he finally got to it he lifted it up to hold it for a moment. With tears streaming down his face, Chris was filled with the memories of his father. When he went to wipe his face, he saw a flash of green from inside the ornament. He quickly walked over to the lamp next to the couch. He held the ornament up to the light to see if anything was inside of it. Sure enough, there looked to be a piece of paper inside of the ornament. Although he was full of curiosity he had no intentions of destroying his best memory of his dad; it had a lot of sentimental value. He sat the snowman head on his nightstand. Kyle would be the first and the last thing on Chris’ mind for the days to come.
A couple of days later Chris went to turn off his alarm clock. When he did, he accidentally hit the ornament off of the nightstand. It fell to the floor and shattered into a million pieces. There was a green piece of paper that stood out to Chris. He opened it up and it read:
Chris,
I did not want the government touching your inheritance so I buried it along with my will in your backyard. Just follow these instructions.
1. Walk three straight steps from your porch.
2. Turn right and take six steps.
3. Dig down about a foot.
That is where you will find the treasure.
-Dad
Chris was astonished. The note was in his dad’s handwriting. When had he had time to write this and bury the treasure? He was sick when he died, and he was too weak. He couldn’t have done it recently. It was all a mystery to Chris.
Immediately, Chris got a shovel and headed for the porch. He followed the directions from every dot of the i’s to every cross of the t’s. Once he had gotten to the spot, he started to dig…and dig…and dig. Until, he hit something hard. He dug around it until he was able to lift the small, wooden box out of the ground. He carefully placed it onto the freshly-cut grass. He then opened the box. Inside there was a folded piece of paper. He immediately unfolded the it.
I, Kyle Riverston, hear-by grant Christopher Riverston full ownership of my house, money, and all of my belongings.
Chris turned over the note and on the back said:
The numbers to my secret bank account are 01225000. The account is under the name Frost T. Snowman. The money in this account will supply for all of your needs, and some for many years to come. P.S. There is enough money to buy yourself a nice Christmas present every year.
Chris’ jaw dropped. He now owned everything.
He just received his father’s house and money from a secret bank account. The first thing he did was thank God. At first Chris had nothing, but now he has everything he needs, plus more. God came through with His promise that “…the plans I have for you…[are]…to prosper you and not to harm you.”(Jeremiah 29:11). All he could do was praise God for this great blessing.
