Everyone is from different places and have a different family background, however we are all still humans on this world. Everything around us affects our perspective on one thing, we might think it means nothing to us but to others it might be something that can save their lives.
One day, just as usual, I went to McDonalds to get a set meal as a snack, when I was walking in a little girl followed me in. I didn't think about it, and just thought that she was there because she didn’t have the force to push open the door and her family members were inside. As I went to the food counter to order my food, she followed me and kept on looking at me. This happens to me very usually, because even though I am Asian I look a little bit Western to the eyes of the Chinese and people always stare at me. However, I was able to see a different type of feeling from her eyes, she wasn’t looking at me just because of anything but because of something that she needed and wanted from me.
I got a set meal of hamburger plus fries, and happily went and sat down, I started to open the hamburger and was just going to take a bit of it. But I found out that the little girl followed me to my table and was staring at me; from her eyes I was able to see the sense and feeling of wanting and sadness. She glazed at the hamburger in my hand and the rest of the set meal on the table, then she said in Chinese “ Sister, I’m hungry.” Looking at her hungry eyes and the saliva drooling out of her mouth, I told her to sit down and gave her my set meal. The sense of hope was showing from her eyes as she thanked me with the most peaceful smile while taking over the meal and started gobbling down the food.
I could see that she hasn't ate anything for days, and just one of my snacks meant something very important to her. To her it was food that she needed, but for me it wasn’t just helping someone that is in need, but also a simple joy for myself. Simple joy is valuable, whether they lead us to an influence study or a turning point in a teenager’s life, their importance is just as significant as complex experiences and obstacles. To us it might be very weird that someone is asking for our food, but for them that is the only way for them to survive. If I didn’t give this little girl my set meal, she might have gotten malnutrious.
This lesson was able to teach me about the fact that we are living a very privileged life and we should feel contentment, and not always arguing about what we have and what else we want. Before we go and buy something we should think if it is something that we really need or is it just something that we want and can live without. We are spending lots of money on things that are not really necessary in our lives, but if we donate these money that we are wasting on thing. Lots of the unprivileged kids living in poverty might be able to be one full meal that they didn’t have in many days.
After this event I started to look at things from different perspectives, and taking some little actions for others. From this lesson I learned that I should appreciate my life as an international student and provide help to those who are in need around us. Whenever I see someone that need help as if it happened yesterday, I remember her hopeful and peaceful smile in my mind. When I see a beggar I would go and get them some food, or give them a few money to get some things for a living. When I do this they thanked me as if I was someone superficial, this made a big difference for them but was nothing to me. Also I will take the clothes that I can’t wear anymore or toys that I don’t play anymore, and donate them to people that need them. There was just the Nepal earthquake, and it effected their life in a great extent. Our school was able to make a group and collect somethings to send over to Nepal; for Nepal, these things gave them hope for their life and was able to save and keep them from this massive disaster.
We should’t just look at things from our own perspectives and also look at it from other people’s perspective. When we do this we will be able to understand the importance of our action, and what is the right thing to do.
