A Prank from the Dead
At the crack of dawn Jacob, the Shepherd, would always wake up with certain despair in him. His extreme sadness was caused by the death of his son. He would always awake at the crack of dawn to attend to his sheep. Taking care of the sheep was the only thing that kept his son, Taylor, off his mind.
The Shepherd got on his horse and made his way to the sheep that were kept on a hill. The hill where the sheep where located was a beautiful view, it was filled with green patches of grass and even though it lacked trees it still had two gorgeous Oak trees that made up for lack of trees. Those Oak trees where Taylor’s favorite place, he would always sit there while Jacob worked with the sheep.
Although Jacob was old and weary he could still make it to the top of the hill with no problem. When he reached the top of the hill he saw his sheep and he also saw the enormous Oak trees. Everything was the same like always except for one thing there was an eight year old kid under one of the trees and he was crying. Jacob thought that the boy might have been lost and belonged to a family who would always go around the hill to get to town.
Jacob wanted to take him to his parents as soon as possible but it would be easier for him if he just took the kid after he was done with his job of caring for the sheep. When the Shepherd finally reached the sheep he saw that the sheep’s were terrified of something. The Shepherd knew they were terrified because he saw that the some sheep were huddling together while others were running around on the hill. The sheep’s started making so much fuss that the Sheppard started getting frustrated with them. Even though Jacob tried he couldn't do anything to calm the sheep down.
The sheep were still ruffled but the Shepherd thought it was in his best interest to leave work early because for a second he thought that the sheep were going to turn him crazy. The Shepherd also remember about the kid and how he needed to be taken into town so that he could stop crying. With all the noise and fussing of the sheep Jacob couldn't hear the loud sobs of the eight year old.
“Hey kid,” screamed Jacob so that the kid could hear him over his loud sobs, “would you like a ride into town?” The kid looked up for the first time and when he did he answered the Shepherd's, question “Yes please.” The kid managed to spit out those words between his sobs.
When the kid got remotely close to the horse, the horse started to get wild and the Shepherd didn't understand why because his horse has always been a shy and weak horse since he is a very old horse as well. “I don’t think your horse is too fond of me”, said the kid. “Nonsense, Louis, loves everybody”, said the Shepherd
Jacob didn't know how he was going to deal with the kid the whole ride to town because they cries of the kid were giving him a migraine already. He was tired of all the crying and also tired of how this horse was acting, he was acting exactly like the sheep on the hill. When Jacob picked up the kid to place him on the horse he was cold as ice but the kid wasn’t complaining about his temperature so Jacob didn't ask him about it. When the Shepherd placed the kid on the horse, the horse started acting out even more than before.
By this point the horse calmed down a little, but the kid started weeping even louder than when the Shepherd first saw him. When the Sheppard least expected it the kid stopped his sobbing as if he was never crying at all and screamed at Jacob, “LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME!” Jacob stopped the horse and was frightened by the voice he heard because it was different from the voice of the eight year old kid. Jacob felt so intimidated by the voice that he did look back and what he saw wasn't a kid anymore.
What he saw was a demon, one with black eyes filled with darkness and evil and with all teeth as sharp as knives. Jacob saw this demon that replaced the child and he was terrified, so he quickly looked away for a second and when he turned back to see the kid or the demon again no one was there, nobody was in a close proximity to him. While the Shepherd was in shock he did hear a slight chuckle in the mists of the summer air, a chuckle that was unforgettable because that chuckle did not belong to the kid on the hill or demon but to a kid he lost to cancer when he was eight, a kid named Taylor.
