There once was a girl named Autumn who was always made fun of.  She was made fun of for three reasons.  The first reason was because she was very short.  Second, because she always wanted to be in the forest.  And third, because her family was very poor.  Her only friends were the trees; they helped her up on to their branches so she could know what it feels like to be tall.  She swore she would someday repay them.

On her 10th birthday in the end of August, her parents bought her some buckets paints, but there was only red, orange, and yellow because that’s all her parents could afford.  She wasn’t exactly sure what to do with the paints so she took them out to the trees.  Surely the trees would know what to do with them.  As soon as she saw the trees, she knew what she had to do.  She took the paints, and immediately started to paint their leaves the vibrant colors.  There was only one problem: there wasn’t enough paint for the pines.  She stared at the trees for a long time, and thought.  Finally, she said, “You shall be called the evergreens, let your emerald green shine through the blankness of the snow.”

The villagers were very pleased with her work, and they offered her money and treasures, but she could not accept them.  “I was just repaying my friends,” she replied.  They still came but all she would accept from them was a little bit of food for her family.  For her next birthday, the mayor came and brought her more paint.  She gladly accepted it and thanked the mayor.  Then she painted the trees again.  The town decided to name the time when the trees were colorful, Autumn, after the girl who paints them.  Every Autumn, to this day, she paints the trees and the town is happy.
