Only if you Want it to Be
The young girl sat in the branch, looking down at the busybodies that rushed by on the sidewalk. She cared not a bit for socializing. In the town she lived, people were very busy and angry. No time for anything, but when there is some spared, they disregard the times they could have with others. She noticed one young boy with scraggly black hair as dark as midnight. He looked up at her with intrigue.
“Whatcha doing up there?” he asked her.
“Just watching,” she replied simply.
The boy climbed the tree and sat next to her. He kept staring at her, not saying a word.
“Can you go away?” she said impatiently.
“What’s your name?” the boy questioned her.
“Melanie,” she hesitated. She didn’t know why she told him, but she did.
“I’m Scott,” he responded. He hopped out of the tree and looked back up at her.
“What?” Melanie asked confused.
“You coming?”
“Why?” she was beginning to grow tired of Scott. “And where would we go?”
“We’re going on an adventure.”
Scott began walking down the sidewalk. He marched straight through people, not caring of running into them. Melanie had no idea why, but she jumped out of the tree and followed him. They walked until they got to the edge of the woods. The woods were forbidden from anyone but those with a Forestpass.
“What now?” Melanie asked him.
“We go into the forest.”
“It’s forbidden nonetheless dangerous!”
“Only if you want it to be.”
Scott hopped the wooden fence that blocked off the woods. Melanie was astounded anyone would even think about doing such a thing. The woods were home to some of the most ferocious wargs and orcs known to man. Wolves were in the woods, too, but no wolf is a warg. Wargs are more vicious wolves: bigger, stronger, and faster. Wargs were also the choice transportation of orcs. Knowing this, Melanie grabbed the top of the fence and pulled herself up and over.
The two walked through the dark forest. Howls and yells sounded throughout. Melanie became unsure of what she had done. Her mother and father would be worried.
No, she thought to herself. They will not realize I am gone.
She looked over to Scott. He just kept marching with a broad smile on his face. What if Scott was an orc in disguise? What if he was leading her to her death?
“Where are we going?”
“Wherever we go will be somewhere special.”
“What do you mean?”
Before he could respond, a warg jumped out of the bushes. It snapped its jaws, making Melanie jump behind Scott.
“Scott!” she yelped. “This is your fault if we die!”
Scott took a stick out of his pocket.
“Are you stupid?” Melanie screamed in Scott’s ear. “What’s a stick gonna do?”
Scott aimed the stick at the warg and it turned into a sword. Scott ran at the warg, stabbing it in the nose. It was not fatal, but the warg ran away.
“I will lead you to somewhere good,” Scott said. “Don’t worry.”
“You keep saying strange things!” Melanie shouted at him. “This is insane!”
“I’m not really insane,” he replied. “I am only if you want it to be.”
Melanie just followed as he started marching again. Melanie still didn’t know where Scott was going, but Scott seemed to resonate some sort of trust.
They walked for several minutes when they came to the opening of a cave. It was so dark, Melanie couldn’t see anything inside. Scott walked inside as if the idea of walking into complete darkness wasn’t insane.
“Scott!” Melanie yelled at him. “Shouldn’t we have a torch or something?”
“I will lead you through the darkness,” Scott responded calmly.
Melanie knew the idea of going inside was absurd, yet she gingerly stepped inside.
“Okay,” Melanie’s voice echoed through the cave. “What now?”
There was no response. No confusing reply. Nothing. She was alone. Scott had left her all alone. She ran as fast as she could without thinking yelling Scott’s name.
She tripped and fell. She couldn’t stop tumbling. Melanie fell and fell down a steep hill.
“You should look where you’re going,” Scott told her.
“Scott!” Melanie scolded him. “I don’t know what’s wrong with you! All I know is that I’ve been yelling at you a lot!”
“Follow me this way,” Scott’s footsteps echoed, and she followed the sound.
The light appeared in the distance. In no time, they were back in the forest by a calm creek. The flowers were beautiful, and the aroma drew Melanie in. She walked forward into the beauty.
“What is this place?” Melanie asked
“This is somewhere special. It is somewhere good,” Scott explained. “But it only is if you want it to be.”
