In the story “Daughter of Invention,” a mother is being treated unfairly by her daughter of how she thinks about her inventions, but then occurs another conflict within the daughter. The daughter is having trouble writing a speech for her school, and once she finally finished it her father ripped it up.So the mom comes and helps her get back on her feet with nothing in return. The problem in this story to me seems unfair, but I might be able to answer, why it would be.

“I  never called her Mom except when I wanted her to feel how much she failed us in this country” (pg.1).As you can see here the mother and the daughter already have this critical relationship going on,but who is the one creating the conflict? What I think is the daughter. The quote above says that the daughter only calls her mother mom when she is disgraced by her, rather than letting it go and forgiving her. First we need to know why “they”(the daughter) is so furious against her mother.” My mother was inventing, sheets pulled to her lap, pillows propped up behind her,her reading glasses riding the bridge of her nose like a schoolmarm’s”(pg.1). In this sentence, the daughter is talking about her mother inventing things and all different items, but behind why is the mom creating these items? The reason why the mother wants to create all these inventions is because she wants to change the world, but with her daughter calling her mother insane, it wont help the mom at all. Also the mother isn’t the only one having a problem, her daughter too is dealing with difficulties at  her school.”Have you gone mad?” “That is her speech for tomorrow you have torn up!” Here is the daughters problem, she has been working on this speech at night for her assembly tomorrow  and wrote three to five pages and finally got her writing back to success . Then her father decides and rips it right in front of his daughter face.I think she should have not shown it to her dad, because the only reason why he ripped it was beacuse he didnt like it.So if she hadn’t shown it to her dad,she wouldn’t be in this situation. After in the story her mother comes right in front of her room and tries to help her daughter.“What we ended up doing that night was putting together a speech at the last moment. Two brief pages of stale compliments and the polite commonplaces on teachers, wrought by necessity without much invention by mother for daughter late into the night in the basement on the pad of paper and with the same pencil she had once used for her own inventions, for I was too upset to compose the speech myself.”(pg.4)So then the mom helped her daughter write the speech. A day later the daughter read the speech to the assembly and everyone absolutely loved it, evens the nuns too..So for this whole article mostly the daughter’s conflict was solved, and what was unfair was that the mother never got her happy ending. It was unfair that the mother didn’t get any supporters for her inventions, but the pro’s and con’s about the story  was that the mother didn’t complain that no one helped her, but she stood up and acted like a brave mother and helped her daughter get through a situation.
