Secrets
Huddled in the dark corner of her room, covering her mouth and trying not to make a sound Payton was terrified about what she had just seen. Hours before the incident, her mother left to go on another business trip to Aspen, leaving her in charge of things while she was gone.
Her mom glared at her sternly and repeated “Not a single person comes over while I am gone, these doors stay locked and you stay inside. I especially don’t want you hanging around with that boy Logan.”
They lived in relatively rich neighborhood, which mostly consisted of Payton’s friends from school. However, lately her regular friend group had drastically turned for the worst. They used to be nice girls with good grades who were a good influence, but all that changed once she started dating Logan.
Keeping what her mom said in her mind Payton still decided to have people over, which was unusual since she always listened to her mom. They had been planning on having people over ever since she found out her mom was going on a business trip, and they weren’t going to cancel the plans now. Once her mom left she texted Logan to come over. Waiting patiently she placed the pizza in the oven and turned on the TV. Setting her phone on the table, she sat there waiting for it to ring. Every five minutes she would look over at her phone hoping someone would text her back. The sun was beginning to set and she was worried there wouldn’t be enough time to have people over. She kept thinking about how excited she had been for this party. As hours went by and no one was answering her phone calls. Payton thought to herself something bad must have happened since Logan is glued to his phone, he’s always checking it. Disobeying her moms rules, she decided to leave the house to go see what was going on.
Walking down the road Payton had this awful feeling in the pit of her stomach that something bad was about to happen. As she got in the driveway she decided to call once more, no answer. She casually approached Logans house noticing that his car was still in the driveway exactly where it was parked after school. Peering through the front doors she noticed that all of the lights were on. Confused she looked in the window to see that he was not alone, there was a girl standing in the living room with him. The girl appeared to be a bit older than Payton. She squinted to get a better look, but she didn’t want to see it anymore. She knew what was happening. Furious and upset she quickly stood up, pushed herself away from the window, and shook her head as she dragged her feet through dark empty streets back to her house. Heartbroken she took out her phone angrily pounded her moms number in.
“Hello?” her mom answered with a weary voice.
Taking all the power she had to admit her mom was right Payton responded “ You were right, Logan isn’t someone I want to date or even be associated with. I honestly never thought he would be the person to do such a terrible thing.”
Her mom’s voice was staticy and breaking up. Payton was barely able to make out words that came of her mouth but she said “Good, im glad you feel that way now,” then immediately hung up the phone.
Confused and worried Payton questioned what her mother had just said. Why did she not even ask me what was wrong? And why did it sound like she was with people and too busy to listen? Having no one to talk to she looked back on Logans house, frowned, and turned around in dismay.
Suddenly she heard screams of distress coming from Logan’s house, as she heard sirens echoing in the distance. Payton couldn’t resist as much as she wanted to go back home and cry, she couldn’t. She ran back to his house and pounded on the door, but there was no answer. She heard a loud thump against the wall, this time she knew that whoever was at Logan’s house wasn’t a friend of his. Knowing this poor girl needed help she took a rock and shattered the glass on his back door. Grabbed a knife from the kitchen counter, clutched it tightly and walked slowly into the room where she had heard the screams. Peeking around the corner she closed her eyes then suddenly jumped out from behind them and stabbed the attacker.
Blood dripping from her hands, she was afraid to look at what she had just done. Although she may had been mad at Logan she would have never wanted to kill him. She gripped the knife as hard and she could then let go, as she listened to it clink against the hard blood soaked floor.
Slowly opening her eyes she noticed that it wasn’t Logan attacking an innocent girl, it was Logan being attacked by the girl. Payton looked over to see if Logan was okay. He was gone, sobbing she stomped over to the girl she had just killed and with a fierce look she flipped her over and stared at her face. Her jaw dropped, it was her mother.
